My dads had a couple, they're great for what they are. The 2.3 was built or tuned by cosworth and was actually quite quick but was a juice monster!
2.8 6 cylinder was nice in Ghia X spec. If you can get the 6 seat option, 6 full size captains chairs. Lovely.
Overall reliable and quite fun to chuck around, as they say its more fun driving a slow car fast than a fast car fast.

Driven a couple of diesel ones and the newer shape is a lovely place to be and feels really good - better than some modern cars.
Also, Scenic RX4 or Forester might be a good shout as a utility.

I got a galaxy 2.3 recently, so far so good. It's a nice comfy drive, fairly spritely and I think for what it is it handles ok, would be better lowered . Mine is completely stock atm. Each seat comes out individualy and the front two are captain seats, they spin around to face inwards so could be camped in if you so wished. Space inside is fair, not massive, but my double bass in it's hard case goes in ok. I've heard gearboxes can be a bit problematic .
seeing the blue with yellow wheels VW up there makes me want to mod mine! must resist and get the illman done instead.
Oh and fuel consumption isn't too bad, but then I was driving a turbo saab automatic before which was lucky to see 19mpg

I can highly recommend the 2.8 VR6 engined Sharans and Galaxys. They're not the fastest cars in the world but thye have a monumental amount of 'grunt' and sound sublime!

I considered a Sharan diesel as you can pick them up for around a grand now. Found the insurance strangely expensive. Guess its because of the extra seats.
My mates dad had a Fiat Ulysse that was at times used to transport motorbikes. Uber practical!

My mates dad had a Fiat Ulysse that was at times used to transport motorbikes. Uber practical! I was going to suggest that too. Ulysse, Synergie and 806 are all the same. In fact raise rear roof height and you get the Expert, Scudo & Dispatch vans - really. I've got an Expert and love the sliding side doors plus ability to "walk though" from front into rear with the two (instead of single & double) front seats. You can get a people carrier version or the E7 taxi but a van with windows and seats is actually lower road tax band due to the strange way DVLA worth things out. My 2.0HDi is pokey as well as decent economy. I looked at Galaxy and good car but I wanted sliding doors as well as the extra height otherwise I'd have bought one - would have had to be the 1.9 VW diesel powered version. Really fancied a Transit Connect Tourneo (lower road tax than the van version ) but out of my price range. Paul h

One of the mods the RS2000 boys do is to use the 2.3 bottom end with the RS2K free flowing head. It comes with a nice tubular manifold as standard too.
The RS lump is cheap too as most people who mod escorts use the zetec lump and theres nothing else the engine really fits.
