Hi Folks, Looking for some advice on Gas supply. I have a little Clarke 90, going to be rebuilding a wee fiat 500. Its all fairly lightweight stuff, no chassis etc. Firstly, will my little machine be OK for this type of work? What are the costs involved in getting a bigger gas bottle?? Reading thro some posts I see that the pub gas route is probably a bad idea but are there any alternatives to the big 2 suppliers, given that a big bottle would probably last me a lifetime !! If there is anyone local(ish) to me with a source I'd be really gratefull for the info. I also do a bit of travelling around UK for work so even further afield may work....(i'll be in Blackpool area next week if anyone has bottle/rergulater for sale cheers gerry

I started off with a clark 90 and they are not a bad welder but in my opinion I would recommend getting a 130amp welder for car chassis welding. I don't have a problem with using pub gas bottles at home. You can get better penetration with a CO2/argonmix and you do get a bit less spatter but its really not a problem. I used to do a lot at work with co2/argon mix, sometimes going through a 15kg roll of wire in a single day and in my opinion there is not enough of an advantage in getting an argoshield mix to use at home so I just stick with Pub size C02. Its easier to get and its still cheap enough.

On a similar Note.... My little 130a welder is still set up for Small bottles, is there an adaptor available to convert the small nylon pipe to a larger size for a larger bottle/regulator

If you measure your nylon pipe and let me know what size uit is I might have one at work.

The welder is in the car ready for next weekends Engine fitting ;D ;D

Right the small pipe is OD 4mm x 2.7id If you have anything that would be really very useful and would obviously result in some drinking vouchers your way ;D

i believe b&Q refill gas bottles... As far as I know they only do patio heater gas bottles, could be quite interesting connected to a mig welder ;D I will check on the fittings tomorrow Dom

wilco motor stores/factors/whatever do an exchange co2 service. IIRC its about £40 to join up and £30 for a filled bottle each time. I'll try it when I run out of pub cylinders ;D Dom; I believe machine mart do adaptors for big bottles

At work we have 10 bottles(full size argoshield) , they cost 11 per month rental (each bottle) and around £25 exchange.

I have one problem with rented bottles, namely I live in a coucil house and am not allowed presurised gas on the property. a rented bottle requires a contract and would get me slung out pub cylinders mostly have to be nicked round these parts local welding supply house (chris loader welding supplies) charges £60 a year rent for a bottle on DD, out of my league.

Hmmm I need welding gas. I have a regulator for a big bottle (i think - still not picked up my welder from wifey's workplace!). I work in a pub. Pub has muchos CO2 bottles out back just to double-triple check - on a 130amp welder, for doing some outer sills, am I going to make a complete pig's bumcrack out of it using CO2? It's just I'm led to believe I can't buy a large CO2 bottle, so i need to either rent one (£££) or buy a regulator for a small bottle (£££) which i then just buy (££££). 'Borrowing' a large one would be much easier!

CO2 cottles always have the same regulator fitting no matter what size bottle. Argoshield (CO2/Argon mix) is a different thread, and is the same as pure argon, I think its the same thread as Oxygen as well (but cant remember for certain). Honestly you would not notice the difference in looks between a weld done with CO2 and a weld done with argoshield, unless you had a hell of a lot of experience and even then it would be difficult to say for certain. You will get slightly less penetration for the same heat setting. My monza was all done with CO2 at home and all though the welds arent perfect (it was a bit of a rush to get ready for C.A.R.S.) there is no problem with them. If I had used you wouldnt be able to tell any difference. The welder was probably set around 100amp maybe less.
