Hi all, I'm after a new daily drive and I cant decide what I want. The main things I need are a car that can handle loads of miles, be able to survive in traffic jams (have you seen the M6 & M42 lately? ) and be cheep! I'm not gonna have a great deal of money available. Even better would a swap for my Nissan 100NX, I know theres a few that arnt keen on it, but someone must love it? Preferably I would like something thats got a bit of power behind it (for overtaking purposes of course ) and RWD, but these arn't essential. Any help would be much appreciated Thanks all!

Same as I said to someone earlier on, Mazda 323F popup light version, or indeed the very different looking 3 and 4 door versions, any Mazda 323 from 89-94 really. Unbelievably reliable if looked after, really good build quality, (think old Mercs) sharp handling and they all shift - the 1324cc 3-door is a good bet, its still nippy but gets into the low tax bracket.

The old 323F is a bit of an acquired taste. I drove one and hated it. Test drive before you buy... Mazdas are good engineered cars. Our old 626 is still doing sterling service since 1992. Its about as anonymous as a car can be though! But even with my driving it doesn't drop below 32 MPG and 37 is plausible. Very comfy and spacious. A better car than most of the "minicab" tat of the early 90s. A chap at work has an E plate Bluebird, again its FWD (Sorry) but he just can;t kill it. If you want RWD then take a look at the obvious ones - Mercs and BMWs. 80s ones are good news. Later on they start getting a little complex looking for my liking. A less obvious choice, and darling of minicab fleets everywhere in the 90s (and they know about beating on a car and needing reliability) is the good old Vauxhall Carlton. Where have they all gone? Cheap as chips, smooth, comfy, spacious... choice of 1.8 up to 3.0 engines and a couple of diesels. Or were you thinking of something older?

1850HL ;D Sorry, I'm on a recommendation-thon at the moment as I'm having withdrawl symptoms - being back at uni and all and sans car Great motor, absolutely great....loved it to bits. 1854cc slant four, makes about 90BHP but with a few simple tweaks you can raise that to 100, will cruise at 80 with ease, the auto boxes (if you go that way) have superbly clean shifts and really make it a delight to drive and the 4 speed OD boxes, although they have a long throw, when in good nick are very responsive. I can't say how much I enjoyed driving this car, it was great. Could have done with stiffer springs but was exceedingly comfortable and I was confident to drive it anywhere, even doing 550 miles in one hit once without any issue (mostly motorway speed). An electric fan and a cooling system thats in GWO will prevent any issues with that - mine had the standard cooling fan and only when sitting in stationary traffic for 2 hours did it ever creep above 3 quarters on the gauge,so you might be ok. And it's rear drive, simple to work on, peanuts to keep running, a doddle to service, makes a good throaty noise and there's plenty of tuning and styling bits and bobs you can pick up and you can get all parts next day as well Really really good fun ;D A good useable one with nice paint, tidy interior and sound mechanics will set you back about 600-800 quid, as always there are bargains to be had, especially if you're prepared just to do the odd job www.antchip.com/rev.wavNoise of my old one, on a standard exhaust and intake Adams crusty old one on a sports exhaust ;D

Not too worryed about the age, nothing too modern though. Hopefully I will be getting a Merc 300E in December off a friend of my dad for £100 Bargain!!! But I need one before December. Was looking at some of the 80's BMW's. Seems that all the ones I like are a bit pricey tho.

The old pilarless 323 was straight wikkid. I loved the damn things. A nice E30 would be cool as well methinks.

Sounds like a good one too look for

I would have said estelle/rapid but they are getting to be in short supply. They seem to have all fallen into the hands of two or three "private collectors", several of which are members on here, and the rest who can be found over on the Sko-forum. I loved my old ratty old beige 120. It was a little moisy on the motorway, but 1200cc and a 4 speed box in a car the size of an Orion or older 3 series is going to be. Didn't stop it cruising at 80 though. I wish now I have invested in the needed welding, and a decent high powered stereo and some sound proofing. I would probably be still driving it now.
