Right. Due to a tit of an estate agent thinking his BMW 318 had enough power to overtake something, my sister's previously treasured, mint condition Mini Cooper now looks like this: So, we need a replacement. She doesn't really want another Mini because it won't be as special as her first car (although if anyone's got a really mint MPi one for about £3k...), so she's now looking at her second favourite car, an MGB GT. I know there's not a lot of love amongst certain members of the RR community for them, but what are they like? Will a 5'1" 19 year old be able to drive it, or will she be struggling to reach the pedals and cope with heavy steering? Anything in particular we should be looking out for? Rubber bumper or chrome bumper? Thanks everybody...

Jeez, sorry to see that and hope she's OK
Anecdotally the chrome bumper ones are better built, and they are better handlers as stock. However I don't think that makes much odds when you are looking at a 30+ year old car. Any that have survived this long ust be at least half decent or bodged to hell and back. Buy with car and buy on condition of the car/shell not on whether its a nice colour or whatever. Look enough and you'll find your preffered colour, condition, bumpers, wheels, etc. as there are plenty of them about.
Robust, stylish, dateless classics. Fairly unexciting to drive as stock but easy to mod into a road warrior.
Pretty much every part ever needed is easily available.
Ideal daily driver.
Easy to sell on again if you decide its not for you / her.

I would have thought that would fix up if the car meant enough to someone. Plus the car has got to be worth a bit of brass anyway it looks to me like one of those write-offs that isnt beyond economical repair...MGBs are a horse of a different breed really, she might not like the drive or she might love it, although being 5`1 might be advantage I`m 6ft and when I drove one it was a bit cramped. Rust of course is the big thing with these, the last one I sold looked very tidy but it went to a guy who was going to re-shell it, and boy did it need it! Personally I would try and get salvage rights on the Mini and get in touch with an independantly owned body shop, preferably one that isnt a stranger to older cars, and get a price for straightening it out. No damage to screen as far as I can see, everything from the wing back looks to have survived, from what I can see it wants inner and outer N/S wing, bonnet, front valance, don't know if they have a front crossmember so cant comment on that, not even sure if there would be any damage to suspension or chassis as the point of impact appears to be forward of the front shocker, but appearances can be deceptive. I can post a pic of a J-reg Mazda 323 I had straightened out after a motorway crash if you want - The damage on this was possibly worse as the screen was shattered and the A-pillar had been bent slightly, but it still lived to fight another day and the cost was still less than the cars value, believe it or not. Just don't forget insurance companies write cars off for a laugh these days, they always get quotes off rip-off body shops who hike up the labour and price the job up using only genuine gold plated parts.

She's fine -a bruised leg where it got trapped by the gearstick and a bit of whiplash but no harm done. Pretty impressive damage when you consider he only managed to clip her though - the police reckon he was doing 80+ as he's managed to write of his car, her car, the car he was overtaking, a Transit parked at the side of the road and knock a power pylon through the roof of a house. It's not going to be repaired - the insurance have said it's Cat B so it has to be crushed. Given the impact was hard enough to shatter a Minilite I'd imagine there might be some suspension damage. Anyway, I might be off to look at a 1980 one this afternoon - anything in particular I should be checking for?

Oh the old Cat B sketch, thats the end of that then, take your point about the shattered wheel that escaped me before. I know the important thing in these cases is that the person involved gets out ok but it does compound the issue if you liked the car and it gets taken off you and flattened. Also fixing the car (when possible of course) can make the whole thing seem less dramatic somehow and helps a bit with the nasty memories of the crash (take it from me I know from recent personal experience) its a horrible feeling when cars start bouncing around in front of you even when you do get out ok. Anyway onto the MG, the best advice I can give you is check for rust, then check again, then check again. Then check again. Lift the carpets up if the guy will let you, crawl around underneath it, this is one of those cars where taking a magnet along to check for filler would be good. Check sills, crossmembers, all seams, floorpan, basically everywhere. I sold a lovely looking 1974 chrome bumper model 4 years ago that could have been scrunched up and taken away in a bin liner (its ok the guy knew this when he bought it!) but from the surface it looked deceptively solid. don't worry too much about everything else and that can all be sorted, its the shell thats important. How much is this one?

BGT FTW Defo go for the Chromebumper, however on the rubber bumper car upgrade the Dampers and the lower springs and you basically have the same car in terms of handling. However for upgrade I.E. the engine and sticking a V8 in, a rubber bumper is the only way as the front cross member is totally different and they are not interchangeable. The B-Series motor is a bit heavy but choose your tuning parts wisely and you will have a lovely motor, also they are bullet proof, same goes for the Gearbox. My Gear box is well over 200000 Miles without a rebuild and is still going strong. If you go for a chome bumper, either go for a later one like mine 1974 or one thats had a engine swap, as the early onesused the 3 bearing crank and are slightly weaker, but you could get a tax exempt model in that. I have restored this one from a wreck, so in terms of problems and pitfalls I think I have had most.

We had a lovely Mini and it was mildly tail ended. hardly any damage. Especially considering it was a Transit that hit it! Anyway the car was repaired at an insurance approved body shop (and Rover Main Dealer, back when we had such things) and I tell you the car was never the same again. It just was "different". Before the accident Em loved it and we kept it mint. After the accident, she just never felt happy in it/with it and we sold it shortly afterwards and bought the Celica.
I know a few people who have had the same experiance with cars either professionally or DIY repaired after a smack

Honestly, girls.
Drive all the way to Fareham and go and look at this BGT which is in fantastic condition.
'I miss my Mini. Can we go home?'
So, we're back looking at Coopers. Thanks for the help everyone...

Even if it wasnt cat b, i can almost guarantee the floor/bulkead/dash is bent. When mini's take a hard front end the force is put straight into the bulkhead and they just fold

To be honest I wasnt really thinking straight when I went into my sermon about fixing the car, if there had been any chance of that the OP would not have been on here talking about its replacement. At the time I posted the panels to repair my 323 had just arrived (after turning out to be wrong 4 times) and the chain of events that started its rebirth began with me and a mechanic going out to the yard where it was kept with the intention of removing the engine and a few bits of trim before weighing the car in. It had been dead for 2 months and to look at it you would have thought it had fought its last battle. I just looked at that pic of the previously nice cooper and thought that if my 323 could be fixed then surely this could, being worth five times as much.

When mini's take a hard front end the force is put straight into the bulkhead and they just fold It took her a good 5 minutes to get her leg free, so yeah. Shame really, it took 9 months to find one that good. Still, the BMW driver is going to court, although they've said it'll probably only be 3-5 points...

First off i hope your sister is ok i never have liked bmw owners ! on the other hand i have just sold my wifes BGT for £900 it was solid with only a little rust on the door skins, to be honest i am 6'2 and have covered 1000s of miles in bgt's i still have one with a v8 4ltr in it even in the standard car there is enough room for two and a weeks gear if you want to go away ....... i know this because i got married in southern spain and drove around europe with the wife ( well b4 baby ) for 4 weeks covering over 5,000 miles. the standard car gave us about 30 to the gallon look for one with overdrive as it dose make life a bit quieter on a long trip, the club is good for parts and cheap and it always has items in stock. i would say get one !! ;

First off i hope your sister is ok i never have liked bmw owners ! Yes, all BMW owners are tw*ts, including myself, pogweasel, bodieanddoyle and loads of other BMW owners on here. All MGB owners are a paragon of openminded friendlyness and would never be the propergators of unfair, crass generalisations. All volvo drivers are 95 and drive at 25mph in the middle lane of the motorway. All citroen drivers are unhinged and have beards. All ford drivers live in essex and are called dave or sharan. All VW drivers belive they are individual All vauxhall driv..... Blah Blah Blah.... Would it be possible for the swear filter to swap the word "all" with "most" "majority" or "some" * this post has it's tongue firmly in it's cheek
