I use two Garages for MOT, the nearest one for the other half daily polo and the other one near to my mates 20 miles away but retro and lowered friendly as long as you don't get the new boy, my two cars are older than him lol
Good luck anyway, BX's are pretty cool

2 things:
1: curse word yourself laughing as they put the back wheels on the brake tester and pull on the handbrake. 2: DO NOT DRIVE IT REGULARLY IN THE HIGH POSITION[1].
I am sure you know this, but I saw someone suggest it. Just no. You will wreck it and/or die.
[1] At least at any normal road speeds. And definitely not in workshop position.

Well, poor old Princess is sat waiting on the drive at the moment because I can only put my attention on the BX just now. I'll get her MoT'd and taxed before too long, and all being well I'm collecting a better bonnet and seats at Brooklands on the 10th of March, so it's just as well I have the cavernous BX with the excellent mpgs.
I'm saving for a welder - if anyone has a second-hand Mig that gas or not gas, I'm interested! - so I might postpone the Princess' MoT until after I've done some of the little weldy bits that she could do with for a very clean pass sheet.

I have a soft spot for the Princess, my dad had one new, a lowly 1.7 L . It took 6 of us (2 adults 4 kids) camping right across France to Switzerland with a large tent and all the gear. The spare wheel went on a roof rack , but the boot being massive took everything else. My Dad was never much of a sporty driver, but having been stuck behind something he must of got annoyed as I remember him dropping it down a gear or 2 and giving it a right boot full to over take. I was rather impressed at the time! Funny how stuff like that still seems vivid 30 years later.. My dad upgraded to the Ambassador next also a 1.7 L. At least that came with headrests and power steering
Look forward to seeing yours back on the road, good luck!

Sadly not. All systems are PAUSE at the moment on this one, got to focus my efforts on getting the BX properly ready for the June MoT which seems miles away now, but there's a lot of niggles to work through on it between now and then so that I can hopefully get a nice clean pass sheet.

Had to move the Princess to load it up with car stuff that's been in the kitchen at my Mum's behest... well she is currently putting a roof over my head so it's the least I could do. Unfortunately, it would seem that while the Princess reliably started on the first attempt, as she always does, the handbrake is worse and the thrust bearing seems to have gone in the clutch. I'm not terribly surprised at the worsening of the brakes or the thrust bearing, the former is likely to happen when a car is left unused and the latter has been grumbling since I got the car and on my to-do list post MoT.
Happily, water isn't getting into the car anymore and on Sunday I shall be collecting some Useful Stuff so I can see some progress being made soon. Unhappily, having a limited income and two cars wanting love is not a great combination, nobody likes to prioritise between their children (at least, not the ones they like).

I picked up the interior which, combined with some of my interior, should lead to a much better set of seats. I have to do a bit of chopping and changing to get the best combo of covers and springs so it'll take me a bit of time to sort. The bonnet, however, did not materialise because the chap that I was supposed to be collecting that from found that his roofrack had broken and he couldn't bring it, an extra 140 mile round trip in the wrong direction was not an option for me so I'm waiting on courier details to see if I can do things that way as I'd still like it to sort things out.
In the meantime she's just sat on the drive doing nothing, sadly. Since Brooklands I just don't seem to have the time or motivation to do much, probably a combination of the rubbish weather and feel rather under it following that vicious bout of vomiting just prior to my day out at Brooklands. We'll get there, obviously, it just might be a month or two now.

Air filter query here. It has been suggested that I fit twin carbs and pancake filters to the Princess, but that doesn't really fit in with what I want to do and would dent my mpg without providing a massive improvement in performance, neither of which are that great to begin with. So, for a single carb 1.7 Austin lump, what's a sensible air filter to fit? Presently I've got a big chunky air filter box with a long ugly pipe that runs to the front corner of the car to provide it with cool air. That pipe sucks up all manner of curse word that can, and has, get sucked straight into the carb completely bypassing the air filter. Part of my initial running problems was a large bit of grit stuck in the fuel jet and I'd like this not to happen again. If I do just fit an aftermarket pancake filter, what's a good one to go for? I hear bad things about K&N filters for this engine, though that's the easiest to obtain. Here's a little bonus image I found online too.

I don't know if its the same for the O series engine in these, but when i was looking at new filters for my B series engine on twin SU's, the quite flat pancake filters seemed to get quite bad reviews. The deeper K&N's that ive got seemed to fair better and after having had them on for a while now id definitely say I'm happy with them, even get a faint induction hiss noise which is nice ( if you like that sort of thing haha)

There's a discussion on this at the moment on one of the mini forums. Some have data which shows the standard air box with an uprated filter is the best solution over a cone filter. Can you try a different box?

Can't see how a piece of grit would get from in the air stream up the jet?

if its managing to bypass the airfilter, I would suggest that the wrong filter is fitted and it isn't sealing with the airbox. The tube to the front is to get cold air in which is better for performance and MPG.

Can't see how a piece of grit would get from in the air stream up the jet? It doesn't make much sense, I didn't even know it was possible, but a couple of mechanics that have worked on these back in the 80s and 90s did ask me if I'd had grit in the carb, explaining it gets sucked in through the cold air pipe, so I'm guessing it's a problem some of them had pretty much from new. The air filter isn't a snug fit it just sort of sits in the air box in roughly the right place, you don't get the impression it's sealed tight with the air box when you do everything up. Whether that's down to the wrong filter being fitted or just that they're all like that I'm not sure, but any grit that does get in sort of rattles around the casing and eventually works it's way into the middle where it can get sucked into the carb. I'll see if I can get a better fitting filter from my local motorfactors, they might be willing to let me try a few out in the filter box if I remove it from the car and clean it up a bit first. I probably need one that's a bit wider and taller than what's fitted.

I've fitted a non genuine one to my mini the other day and it's never sealed better! It must be taller than a unipart one so has done the job!

My dad had k&n's on his maxi for years, swore by them and they were well suited to the highly tuned lump. Once down graded to a standard engine it just didnt seem to have any go, no low-end tourque, so he replaced the k&n's with a standard air box and drilled afew holes in it to let abit more air in. This was on twin carbs with standard filters and it worked a treat. Id recomend trying a standard filter and drilling the standard airbox where it cant be seen, if it doesnt work out just wack some tape over the holes. My opinoin of k&n's are if you want that much more air, you need that much more fuel and will need to change the needle in the carb, better cam and exhaust etc etc. Its all relative.
