Just aquired a 1955 10 for my dad, it currently has one of the old style V5's issued 1992, so before SORN requirement and never had a V5c issued because its not been on the road or required since. How do I get a new V5c in my dads name? the original reg is on the vehicle and some paperwork to link the car to it, also not showing up on any searches so i'm hoping it hasn't been re allocated. Having flexed my google-fu it sounds easier to get the current owner to sort it out then send the v5c over to my dad to fill out and send off, or is it not much bother to deal with myself? Thanks in advance

Looks like a tidy machine Can't help with V5 info but ... If it's been off the road since 1992, there's a good chance you don't need to declare it SORN either ;D My understanding : If it's been taxed or SORN has been declared at least once since SORN was introduced in 1998, you need to SORN it once it's in your name If it's not been taxed or SORN'd since 1998, you don't need to declare SORN ;D Take as long as you like getting the car the way you want it, tax when you're done, after that you need to tax or SORN it. Background info to get you started www.the-ace.org.uk/unlicenced-vehicles-on-private-land/"There might be some vehicles that do not fall within the VED exempt category, yet are exempt from SORN because they have been off road and unlicensed since before the introduction of SORN on 31 January 1998. " ps - expect to get told "It needs to be SORN'd" if you ask DVLA or post office, not sure how you can check yourself if SORN has ever been declared ? (I know DVLA website has misleading info on at least one of my beasties ) Hope it helps

The guy that owns it has never sorned it and it won't need to be, being before 1998. If it had of been taxed or sorned between 1998 and 2005 ish it would of got a V5c issued at the same time. Think i might need to call the DVLA.............
On the upside the numberplate has not been re issued

you should automatically get a new red V5 but will have to declare SORN cos afaik it aint transferable.

If it currently has a V5, it's as simple as filling in the new keeper section and sending it away, I beleive it only becomes more tricky if you only have a pre-V5 buff logbook. Since we can't see the numberplates in the pics, I can't do any searches to see if it appears anywhere, but if it's not showing up on the DVLA site, they will get in touch with you and tell you the next step if it's an issue with sending you a new V5C.
**TAKE A PHOTOCOPY OF THE FULL V5 BEFORE SENDING, SO YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO REFERENCE IF THE DVLA DO GET IN TOUCH!**
The 'no-need to declare SORN' rule becomes invalid as soon as the keepers change, so when the new V5C comes back in your dad's name you'll have to declare it as SORN, and maintain the SORN status until the car goes back onto the road.

**TAKE A PHOTOCOPY OF THE FULL V5 BEFORE SENDING, SO YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO REFERENCE IF THE DVLA DO GET IN TOUCH!** I'd take several - and perhaps even go as far as getting them witnessed by someone "respectable" (you know - ususal copper/judge/stockbroker/other person you'd get to sign a passport photo etc.). This is the DVLA we're dealing with... The 'no-need to declare SORN' rule becomes invalid as soon as the keepers change, so when the new V5C comes back in your dad's name you'll have to declare it as SORN, and maintain the SORN status until the car goes back onto the road. If a SORN is present then yes, it will need a new SORN declaration when you get the V5C. However, if it hasn't been taxed since 1998 you don't need to: From the directgov website: www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/UntaxedVehicle/DG_069727

Even better if you have a local DVLA office - you can hand your V5 in there and ask for a stamped receipt for it, just to save any "lost in the post" conversations The 'no-need to declare SORN' rule becomes invalid as soon as the keepers change, so when the new V5C comes back in your dad's name you'll have to declare it as SORN, and maintain the SORN status until the car goes back onto the road. you should automatically get a new red V5 but will have to declare SORN cos afaik it aint transferable. I'm sure these are both wrong - if never SORN'd you don't need to SORN it ( but I think you already know that ) Hope you get sorted

Think I might just got to local office its a half hour drive away and I should come away with what I need, i'll let you know how it goes. Top plan. I've never had a brilliant experience with the DVLA (they're usually taking money off me) but I've also never had any horror experiences and I think that's because I've managed to do everything via the DVLA local office. I think they're all being shut though, which is a real pain. I'd say write to your MP to complain but I think the decision has already been taken.

For a giggle i sent an email enquiry to correct department to see what they would say, heres the reply. Dear damien4884 Thank you for your email received on 12/2/12. Your email reference number is ######. You will need to complete the new keeper section of the V5 registration certificate and send it with a covering letter to: DVLA Swansea SA99 1BA It might also be helpful if I explain that on the 31 January 1998 the law changed. Keepers are now required to notify DVLA if their vehicles are to be kept off the public road untaxed. The scheme only applies to vehicles where a tax disc expired on or after 31 January 1998. As your vehicle was untaxed on this date, it does not fall into the Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) scheme. It will only become liable to SORN if it is re-taxed and then subsequently taken off the road. More information regarding the SORN scheme can be found on the website www.direct.gov.uk/motoring Picked the car up today and another spanner in the works, the previous owner filled out the V5 but it never got sent off, so still in second owners name, not 3rd as should be. I'll probably take it into local office explain the situation and try to get it resolved without the original v5 leaving my sight!!

Hi Guys, had a similar issue with a 1954 A40, been off road since 1978. Bought vehicle with old style green V5, Not in sellers name. Sent off for change of owner, recieved new V5c (red one), Now the vehicle has been transfered to the data base, so it would appear that the sorn thing kicks in. The vehicle came back as a PLG tax bracket. this can not be changed untill the vehicle is taxed. So got new log book, put it on sorn, Put it through MOT, insured it and took all paperwork up to DVLA local office, log book changed to tax exemt (historic) free tax disc issued, no need for vehicle or photos to confirm vehicle. And kept original reg no. DVLA can be helpfull if approached and you follow the system. Hope you find this helpful. Andy
