surely the "item not as described" clause comes into act here [/quote] that what i argued with them but they wont give out the blokes name and address to me as they say its confidential.the thing that surprised me was that paypall advertise buy with confidence so you think you coverd until you read the small print. i hope other people will read this as a warning

Request his contact details through ebay. You'll get his address and phone number and in return he'll get yours... I find difficult sellers become a lot more helpful once you let them know you know where they are... and a phonecall can do wonders when emails have failed. pages.ebay.co.uk/help/tp/know-seller-contact.htmlFinally went down this route ... and we have progress (I hope) Me rings : phone gets answered with a bloke saying "Hang on - I'll go get her" 2 min later lass comes to the phone, her : "Hello ?" Me : "Ebay - when is a good time to collect the Hillman stuff?" Her : "Just a sec - I'll put my boyfriend on" Bloke (again) - Hello ? Me (again) : "Ebay - when is a good time to collect the Hillman stuff?" Him (quite friendly) : "Oh yeah, just got back from a day out and was meaning to ring you, come down anytime you like" Me : "Tomorrow (Monday) about 6pm ?" Him : Yeah, no problem, there's always somebody in, just help yourself. Me : "Thanks" Me's not a happy bunny - it sounds like it's been sitting there waiting for me for 2 weeks but they r efused didn't think to give me a number I could ring, or details about where it was or when I could collect it. 99p listing is a free listing if it doesn't sell they don't get charged hence lots of people put items at 99p & hope they will take off 99p start and no reserve the preferred selling method according to the RR/Ebay "how to" guide retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=usetharch&action=display&thread=102246"I am really convinced by the 99p no reserve approach ... " I've used it a few times with decent results. For "popular" stuff, it gets lots of folk into a bidding war / feeding frenzy (hopefully) Or just to clear the cupboards, tat will find it's own value and it saves me taking it to the charity shop or tip But yes, I've been the only bidder on a few oddball things, only for them to get taken down near the end AFAIK Ebay won't let anyone cancel a sale in the last 24 hours (unless they changed the rules recently) I shall admit, some of the stuff I have sold for 99p has gone for less (but not as much if it didn't work!) Quite a few items I have sold for 99p though have found their own value, sometimes more than even breakers and dealers want! If I am honest, some of the items I got a half decent price for I felt I would need to chuck into the bin! Whilst I agree with Al on parts which have a limited or scare market, the main key to getting the money you want (bar the low starting price) is to list it to end at the right time. I have seen people list things to finish at 5:30pm on a weekday (basically when the roads are rammed with people trying to get back hom) and end up dissapointed later. A good description and suitable finishing time shall ensure some sucess with ebay. As for the communication aspect, a number of people do suck (sometimes myself included I hate to say (work, helping others, spur of the moment issues etc. etc.). I recently won a diff on ebay. Despite me leaving a telephone number soon after the auction (I only lived 10 miles away, so a courier was pointless!) it took the seller 2 weeks to contact me! To be fair I did also get to buy a half decent steering rack too!

some people just suck at communication. ^ this Went down today and collected it from Skipton, seller was helpful and friendly, had a good chat. Tale is he got his girlfriend to list it, her not being mechanically minded didn't want to get involved with messages from some unknown car nut or give out her mobile number & home address. All fine and I understand that - but WHY get somebody like that to list your car stuff The offending item / potential bargain / possible new doorstop I'm busy tomorrow but need to fit this and prove it (good or scrap) before the weekend. If anyone around Bishop Auckland has an empty workshop space & an engine crane I can borrow on Wednesday or Thursday I'd appreciate a PM Thanks for the ideas & suggestions, it's all appreciated

Ah dude I'm so glad to see that picture!
Best of luck with the engine swap. Sorry I'm a bit too far from you to come by and help.

Sucks, but at the end of the day you're scouting for bargains on an online auction Web site and these are the type of pitfalls that come with the territory.

I bid on a spoiler on eBay that I quite fancied with a very low starting bid unbeknown to me the the vendor had advertised it on a forum I frequent at something like £120.
When I realised I asked him a question using the forum PM function about posting it to Scotland and then he offered to pull the auction for the asking price.
I offered him less than the asking price which he then declined stating that he wouldn't accept an offer!
WTF?
