I'm on one of those evening classes for basic car maintenance, the guy who runs it was a mechanic for years - though the course itself is meant to really just teach basic servicing, that's so simple you don't need to devote much time to it, so loads of other stuff is being shown. People with projects etc. have asked him how to do some things and as a result we're doing all sorts in addition to that, first proper lesson in we changed track rod ends after he showed us in 10 minutes the week before. He just said right go find a car and change the track rod ends, we thought he was joking! Me and my mate walked over to the most exotic car of the 10 or so MOT-failures they have lying around (Volvo 440 Xi) and eventually got it done, funny looking back now because it was such a simple job to do really. Would be confident enough to do my own now which is the important thing. He'll be showing us all sorts later on based on requests made, I need to change the discs and pads on my Avanzato so he'll be showing us how you do it safely. You can bring your own cars in and get jobs done on them too, at the very least you'll get two cheap services out of it. I'd well recommend it to a novice, I'm enjoying it so far.
Plus you get bonuses, they have those machines for quickly fitting/removing tyres so I'll be taking a set of wheels down to get them removed so I can get them refurbed. Then later I'll come back with some slicks to fit, save me a job. Brake pads need changing? Turn up in the car with some new pads and you'll get shown how to do it there and then, etc. Suppose it would all depend on who is teaching it really, it doesn't really have a set lesson plan or anything, we just kind of do things as we go along.
There's a seperate course for car bodywork including welding etc. so might enroll on that next time then I can start throwing all sorts of rusty 80s Daihatsus down the drive.
