make a couple of cardboard curvature templates, take a scrap yard trip and find a roof or even a bonnet thats about the right curve and will cover the hole, and weld it in.
i have a deep hatred of webastos, it seems no matter how much effort you put in they never fit right, and the amount of wood they use to make em puts me right off too.

You could always cut the whole roof off ready for the summer and stick grunties roof back on for the winter layer on

I seem to remember a new Webasto is £650+. I've had two cars with them (Imp & MGB GT) and love them. Far better than the glass pop up types.

Yup webasto still exist, west midlans somewhere I went there to get some bits once... iirc they keep all the old patterns, personally I’m a fan the cars I’ve had with them fitted worked very well didn't leak and provided a 'best of both worlds' experience, never had to mess with one though so cant comment on their specific intricacies...

would be nice but I don't want to modify the car that much as it will end up with official interest as it does not have a chassis

Having seen this car at HC's establishment, I'd say sack off the monstrosity of a "sunroof" and replace with some fresh(ish) steel.
Something that wonky and held in with nails is never a good idea...
Did look a sound base though, so good luck!

Had the same issue on my Dolly when the Webasto roof was torn off on a trackday by the sheer power of the 16v lump! I purchased perspex, laid it on roof, realised it looked wibblepoo so rivetted a steel plate on instead.

Please put a sheet of tinted Polycarb over it... Pretty please The Webasto on a Rover P6 I had in the mid-90s flew off in a storm, I replaced that with a sheet of perspex that I sealed down with screws into the original wooden brace for the sunroof, sprayed the back black where it over lapped the roof and ran a line of gutter sealant around the edge. It worked a treat and I loved it. On a mega hot day it was like driving around in a greenhouse, but 90% of the time it was amazing. Driving at night on a motorway with what felt like no roof, but no wind noise was amazing. Try it ;D

Have to admit I do like a webasto. And I've had a few of the new pugs with the glass roofs as hire cars, have to admit i do like it. Before I had the MX, I never realised how much nicer it is having that much extra daylight coming into a car

I have the same problem with an XJC which has turned me off doing any work on it for a long while while I try to decide what to do with it. Funny enough I also have a similar situation to you in that I have a restorable other XJC which I bought for parts but can't bring myself to cut the roof off it I have to say I share that deep deep hatred of Webasto roofs. Worst things that were ever fitted to any car. One other potential idea that I was thinking about was transplanting a sunroof from another car in it's place - some modern horrible Fiats (Stilo, Grand Punto etc) have a large glass sunroof like this
