Been thinking about getting a 480 for a while. What do I need to know? Good points/bad points? Which model? And what are the differences between the models? I've seen quite a few cheap (sub £300) ES's are they any good or should I hold out for a Turbo?
As in the song from Grease - Tell me more, Tell me more.

I had a metallic black '88 480ES 1.7 carb-fed manual about 5 years ago. Really comfortable, fairly quick, quite good on fuel, well equipped for a base model (electric windows, central locking, power steering, speed sensitive wipers, alloys, etc), very reliable (nothing broke, ever!), but noisy (engine noise and road noise) and it took me an age to strip out the entire interior and finally seal everything so it didn't leak like a sieve (they all do that Sir)! Recommended - I'd have another with no hesitation! Dale

480's are quite cool, but the 400 series in general aren't the best Volvos IMO.

So the ES is the base model? I've heard about the common 480 factory addition of a swimming pool in the boot. I've also heard that the on board computer is likely to give very weird and wonderful readings.
What other models are there? I think I've seen a 480 Sports??a 480 GT and the 480 Turbo advertised is that the full range?
How robust are the Turbo's? I've heard that they are quite rapid.
Finally if I start driving one will it mean that I will lose the ability to check my mirrors before I pull out? ;D

The ES is not a base model, the lowest spec 480 was S. 480 come with 3 engine types 1.7, 2.0 and 1.7 turbo all of which are renault. The 1.7 turbo is the best choice as the N/A lumps are had to tune and a little slow. 480 are very robust mechanically, what lets them down is the electrics. Plus they tend to be a bit leaky, mainly from round the glass boot, rear lights, the relay box which is half under the bonnet and half in the foot well. Turbo are great, as standard they have 120 bhp which is developed at 4500 rpm the only problem is the ignition is heavily retarded after this and the car feel like it don't want to rev. Early turbo run 10 psi of boost and have a less tuned cam and later turbos run 7 psi boost and a better cam, they both produce the same power. This can be cured by getting it chipped. My car ECU has be altered by a guy called Richard Pruen, who is a bit of a 480 guru. He 480 runs a T3 turbo and 280 bhp, hes just fitted a superchager aswel to counteract the lag. Check out the forum on www.volvo-480-europe.org for for info. His ECU mod lets the car run 13-14 psi of boost over the standard 7 psi (or 10 psi if you have an early turbo model) and the spark is advanced so it make peak bhp at 5500 rpm. The result is around 170 bhp on a sound engine and a good increase in torque too. I have had the speed on my 480 idicating 137 mph! And no I still use my mirrors! Any other questions?

Always liked these, remember sitting in a nice new one at V.O.C. national show, pinned one down as future purchase. Pondered one as a daily 3 years ago but scared off with tales of scary electrics, and they must be cheap for a reason, but if this is a second car, gotta be worth a shot hasn't it. I'd still love one in the collection.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts
