I have a problem with a Corsa 1.7d (isuzu engine). Basically the alternator died, and i replaced it with a good second hand one, everything was fine for 2 days (alternator charging, read 14.2v at battery etc), then on the way home the ignition warning light comes on and it cuts out. I fully charged the battery and started the car up, now when the engine is idling the alternator it not charging but when you rev the engine or hold the revs at 2000 rpm+, the alternator starts to charge, when you let the engine idle again after, it stops charging and the battery starts to drain. I've checked all the connections and cleaned them, checked drive belt tension, checked for blown fuses, checked the relays etc but nothing makes any difference.
Anyone have any other ideas/things to check?

Does the charge warning bulb on the dashboard work? The bulb forms part of the charging circuit, so if blown will produce odd results as the alternator will not be receiving the 12v feed to generate a field.

Yes the bulb does work.
Just been having another look at it. There's a 2 pin plug that plugs into the alternator, i swapped this over for another one, everything started working again and had 14v at the battery, then 5 mins later the alternator stopped charging and i'm back to square 1 again...

The thing is how well was the SH one stored, if they get water or damp in em they corrode and that shortens thier life concidrably, keep, em dry and they'll last?

Indeedy!
Recently I used to only use secondhand alt that were genuine after having a spate of alternators (namely on BL cars and a MkIV XR3i) where the pattern alts used to behave and die in a strange manner (dad's XR3i went through 3-4 alts in 3 years, oddly enough the 'new' alt on the XR3i I owned did not last long (but the SH item did) and the 'B's Unipart 'Silver' alternator would either charge at 13V and would stop charging as soon as 13v was reached (but start again once it dropped to 11.5V (until one day where it refused to charge full stop!).
New OEM branded alts so far I have been OK with and SH genuine items.

If you've got a multimeter, pull the alternator to pieces and check the rectifier, usually a diode that has gone if it's only making power at high revs.
