This is a question and rant rolled into one, I think.
I'm based in Wednesbury (between Wolverhampton and Brum) and I'm looking for a decent Volkswagen/old skool breaker in the area, even a bit further away? I'm after a parcel shelf and a seat base/seat foam for my drivers' seat (bolster is kaputt, fabric is ok) and a couple of other bits.
Thiefbay is good for small parts but when it comes to larger parts, the postage kills it (Most parcel shelves are in the region of £25 which I don't mind paying at all but postage adds another £15 in most cases) I've just paid £18 with postage for two new rear window mechanisms, which is excellent IMO. I also paid £20 for a front grill with the spots included, most places wanted £30 each for the spots alone, so not all bad.
I've been to Volksmagic, good service and knowledgable but again, steep prices.
I just feel like people try to pull your pants down when it comes to VW parts, I know they're quality but prices are a bit excessive in most cases. I don't mind paying good money for something IF IT'S WORTH IT. I've been into Retros for years and I know you have to pay high for certain parts and you have to bite the bullet sometimes but it's a mk2 Golf, not exactly rare.
"That'll be £70 for a pair of foglights, one which is steamed up with moisture and one with a crack on the back" "That's a bit steep mate" "It's Veedub mate, quality parts blah blah blah"

I'm hoping that my experience with VW breakers and specialists is a bit more positive as my time with the Golf will undoubtedly find me at the mercy of them at some junction.
Ive always found ebay to be pretty reasonable, but then I generally only looking in an area I'm prepared to collect from.
While we're talking about VW parts, I don't suppose anyone has a pair of Mk2 GTI front arch trims? Both of mine are cracked you see...

I think you've hit the nail on the head with the second part mate. I love Minis, always have and owned many and will in the future. The prices for Mini parts are fair and second-hand parts are dirt cheap. I went over to a Bug and the parts were ridiculous, for example, £30 EACH for chrome hubcaps, which were pitted and looked like poop. Why the price? because they're genuine "Veedub" Do me a favour In the end, I had non genuine bumpers and hubcaps on my Bug, some on a aircooled forum (which I used mainly for info etc) looked down their noses about it, but I didn't give a poop because I hate the "scene" with a passion. I had a Bug because I love them and it was one of the best motors I've ever had.

I think u can get them new through GSF mate GSF are excellent for mk2 parts. I paid £28 for a waterpump which is very good. £16 for a cambelt & tensioner and £16 for a pair of front bearings. Hopefully, you'll be able to get the arches but I do know a lot of the trim stuff and stuff like fog lights are unavailable at the moment. Thiefbay is hit and miss, mostly, you get people wanting stupid money or you'll stumble on a pair for £20.
