Hey just wondered if it was a legal requirment to have a reverse gear fitted?
I'm about to build a cbr 1000 engined Reliant Kitten and I'm not to bothered about having a reverse, I'm doing it in a way to not modify the original chassis.
I'm trying to avoid having to have it IVA'ed. as far as I'm aware an engine conversion doesnt require an IVA, but I'm not sure if it would pass an MOT without a reverse?
Any info would be great!
Thanks you

I don't think you need one. I've never had it tested anyway. It'll be fun getting it off the rollers without reverse though

I cant see there being too much of a problem. Take this for example

It only weights sub 500kg, it wouldnt be hard to push it off the rollers! haha.
If i don't modify the chassis at all then technically it will not require a SVA/IVA would it? Engine conversions come under the point score system?

Nope, if it's just an engine conversion you'll be fine without an IVA

Thought that was the case, awesome! would welding engine mounts to the chassis require an IVA? I am hoping to use the existing mounting points but making my own mounts. Also wishing to change to disc brakes on the front, although i don't think these modifications alter the vehicles chassis so i should be okay?

You can weld extra mounts to the chassis, that's fine. You shouldn't need a reverse gear for the MOT, I've had cars pass with no gears at all (My 106's clutch exploded on the way into the station, the tester nearly ended up driving it through the back wall of the garage )

Some basic bike conversions have no reverse gear, others have a starter motor as a reverse gear, just for convenience. So I think it would be ok.

Shouldn't be any legal problem without reverse. Just plan where you park to avoid pushing back up a hill :-)
Engine conversion and new engine mounts won't attract BIVA attention.

Engine conversions come under the point score system? Engine conversions do come under the points system, but engine and 'box alone wouldn't lose you enough points to need BIVA. Someone please correct me, but off the top of my head you score points for originality of chassis/monocoque, engine, gearbox, steering, suspension and axles. The Peel P50 thing isn't really a car. It'll be classed as a trike or quadricycle I'm not sure from a legality POV for modifications, but a new build would need reverse and I wouldn't want to end up in a situation where I was unable to remove myself from my position without getting out to push. Can't imagine it'd go down well if you got a tug either, though I have no idea if they'd pin anything specific on you.

I had an auto mazda with a blown reverse gear, drove it like that for months, you soon learn to park in places you can drive out forwards or park on a slope.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

You will end up cutting the passenger footwell and the bulkhead out to get the engine in so take the body off the chassis to make life easier all round . A two piece prop is essential and as long as you don't do too many burnouts the stock reliant axle will cope with the cbr motor ok . Front discs are pretty straight forward using vw polo discs and Mk 3 fiesta calipers but you will need 13" wheels . You can live without reverse but it's not hard to adapt a starter to drive the prop adaptor as your mounting the engine at the front . The reliant axle has a 3.23 diff which is better as you have two final reduction ratios , one in the bike engine and one in the rear diff , very few axles have such a high ratio as they run on much larger wheels compared to the 10 " on the kitten .
If I can help pm me

To pass IVA you need a reverse (can be electric drive).

Thanks for the info guys! I'm interested in anymore info you have on the brake conversion! I'm trying not to cut the body at all, but i will if i have to, i may remove the body to clean it up and paint it
