hi guys, got a problem with the fuel to air mixture with my car, its running very rich and back firing like hell through the carb, (even more when cold) need to adjust the mixture or the dizzy to see if that fixes it, but in the mean time if took off the paper air filter to reduce the risk of it setting on fire (happened to my mates 56 chevy) its booked in at a garage next week for some welding for its mot and i was just wondering what your opinions for driving with a filter?

i don't think the world will end, yes technically it's risking the engine should you drive through a sand storm but i've run bike carbs with open trumpets for a few years, and never noticed any extra wear when the engines been taken down (twice now), or had any issues.

Don't drive with no air filter, you'd be amazed at the amount of debris flying about in the air that can and will get sucked in, tar and grit makes a very effective grinding paste.. You often see open trumpets on race cars, and sometimes trumpets with coarse mesh. Always a bad idea and will shorten the life of your engine. A well maintained K&N filter is the way to go.

If it's a Daihatsu Mira... don't do it! Otherwise, in the short term, not a problem.

Dpends, if it's an airfilter over the carb with an inlet in the bay I recon it will be ok, done it hundreds of times and no nuns or kittens have been harmed (or engine parts) if it's a sperate box on the wing leave it, it's far enough away to not catch fire and especialy if it has an external inlet which will pickup all sorts of curse word. I do wonder if people read the whole post before answering?? a well oiled K&N is just as likely to catch fire as a paper element

Isn't that more likely to be leanness anyway? Firing through carb. Timing out, valve clearances, industrial size air leak maybe.

Get a cheapy steel mesh filter - not as good as normal filters, but better than nothing... and fireproof

Possibly getting a bit extravagant here, but could the filter be moved? A cone filter on the end of the inlet track instead of on top of the carb?

FFS he only wants to drive it for a week till he can get to a garage to have it looked at, why not swap in an EFI motor till then, no worries with mixture then LOL

Don't forget that when you do get it tuned, they should do it with the air cleaner on so that the mixture is right. If you tune the car without an air cleaner and then put it back on, the mixture will be slightly leaner.

Err, wouldn't it be richer? Filter, (slightly) more restricted airflow, same amount of fuel....
