Since I have had to sell my Cortina due to medical reasons, I have now decided to build something else, This time it will be small, old and light, and SIMPLE!!!!!!!!with what I am thinking along the lines of, 150hp would make it fun, 200hp would be Yeeehaaaa, and 250hp fookin dangerous!!!!!!!!!!! probably not weigh much more than 400k without driver, the next part of the puzzle for me is engine, what do I go for, got to be small, light and tuneable, my first thoughts were Hyabussa, 1300, small light loads of power, but no torque, so it would suffer tugging 500k about with the driver, turbo it, Possibly, but I'm now going away from simple, so gentlemen and ladies what options do I have??? One option that seems to hit the right notes is the 225 Mazda RX8 engine and box, stripped of all the unwanted cr-p its not that big, aftermarket ecu and it may be a winner, SX200, possibly but probably too wide for the engine bay, ST170, again with aftermarket ECU you may get 180 hp out of it, VW/Audi turbo20v??, how hard are they to turn around, and what box do you use, 4 age is a cracking engine, which could work, but its getting old now, Now the other option is a Diesel, big flat torque curve, can late model diesels be made into stand alone engines with aftermarket ECUs generally diesels are heavy, so that is a big disadvantage from my point, but, there may be an engine out there that may tick all the boxes, but has to be RWD, possibly with a 6 speed on the back

The popular bike engines will easily pull a light car along. Locosts and such are around 500/600 kilos, and are happy with ZX9, Fireblade, Blackbird, Hayabusa engines.
For RWD car engine, MX-5 2.0i Sport is 160bhp, totally overlooked for conversions, and if you're adamant about 6 speed box, they have that too.

...and how did I forget Vauxhall Omega X30XE. V6, RWD, 208bhp.

I've got to say, although they'll make a light car shift pretty damn well, bike engines really don't like the weight when you're just maneuvering, it makes things very loud and awkward to park, or shuffle along in traffic. Even the Radicals at college which were sub 500kg including a 6'4" driver were a pain to move around on the engine. (ZZR1100 in one and Hayabusa in the other).
That said, if you don't plan to do much normal road driving in it, then they can be a right laugh, and the lack of needing a gearbox in the tunnel could be a bonus if the car's not very wide. A modern 6 speed can take up a lot of the width of a small cars cockpit!

Here's one that seems to be overlooked for some reason - G13B engine from a Suzuki Swift GTI, they mate straight up to a SJ413 5 speed box. Going to be looking at going down this route myself with the Corolla.

Volvo 850 5-cylinder or even T5? all alloy so not too heavy, 2.4 20v makes 170bhp NA or 225/250bhp turboed. Manual box from a Volvo 960 will bolt right up with the standard clutch, only a 5 speed though. Plenty of info on fitting the T5 into a RWD 240 about.

Thank you gents, this is the type of info I need, I was looking at the Volvo 5t cyl on Ebay and the 960box info is invaluable, Suzuki info has never even crossed my path, which again is why I asked on here, the range of diversity is huge, How much Hp does the G13b produce, availability of tuning stuff, etc, J engines have always seemed expensive to modify me,

They're 100bhp as standard, but their strong point is they're really light, have a forged crank and, iirc, forged rods too. The SJ gearbox is crazy light too. Tuning wise I think there's plenty out there, it's just a case of looking around the forums to see what others have done to tickle a bit more life out of them.
I'm going to be looking at going down the turbo route, you can turbo them on standard internals/map up to about 8psi. After that you need to bore the block out to 75mm and buy some pistons for a Vitara (~£100) to lower the compression and buy a stand alone ECU. Been reading up on some very impressive figures that the engine is capable of, impressive given it's size and very much under rated I feel.

Honda S2000?
Granted it may be tricky finding an economical door, but already RWD (with 6 speed box;) ), Japanese reliability and plenty of go

Looked at the s2000, I do know of an unrecorded badly damaged car, but I think the engine may be too big, If it could be stood upright, without major problem, sump modified or chopped, then it probably would benefit from some short TBs and an aftermarket ECU

I have had a good look at the rx8, if you strip the cr-p off them, drop the alternator down low in stead of on top, there is a position on the LH lower where I think the PAS pump fits, they start to become reasonably compact, and come with a 6 speed box

If you're after light, the k-series takes a lot of beating.
The wankles aren't quite as light as a lot of people like to think iirc, I'm pretty sure they're about 120kg for the N/A lump that was in the earlier RX-7's. Not terrible, but not really any better than a small/medium iron blocked 4-pot. There was a discussion about it on MX-5 Nutz and it came to the conclusion that fitting one adds a tiny bit of weight to an MX-5, rather than saving any.

I know the Rotors on a RX8 are deceptively/incredibly heavy, put 3 of them together and things start to get weighty,
