Hi! I'm having very silly thoughts at the moment... The VAG 5E engine; what's the bolt circle for the gearbox mount? Or in other words; would a RWD gearbox bolt to it easily? Or are there any RWD gearboxes known to fit these engines? And how long and heavy are they? Lenght shouldn't be a big issue, as the intended 'bay was designed to house a six cylinder & front rad anyway Only the tilt could be problematic perhaps... Thanks! Jan

I had a MKII Passat GL5 and gearbox was different to the 4 pot - as I found out when I wanted to fit a 1600 diesel ! It was 20+ years ago but I do remember the engine was *blinking* heavy so it must have been quite substancial to leave that thought with me. Seeing Volvo used the VW 5 cylinder D20 diesel in the 240 I wonder if that could be a RWD gearbox donor.

I thought it was the 850's that used a VW derv? Maybe the earlier ones were too, but I didn't think so. Worth looking into.
As far as I'm aware it should bolt upto a Porsche 924 box, but that's not much use as they use a rear mounted transaxle. The other option if there's space would be to use a Quattro box with the centre diff welded up and obviously the front shafts removed.

VW diesels were used by Volvo in a number of models well before the 850 although to be fair the 6 pot was the most prolific version. In UK, AFAIK, the diesel 240 was never sold with the 740 6 cylinder being the first diesel to be officially offered. BTW the 340 was available in Europe with a Renault diesel but again never sold here. Paul H
