Had a conversation with my mate recently about what was your earliest memory of a car when you were young.
For me it was about 1970 ish in a family friends Rover 2000TC hitting 100 mph on a long straight on the A1 near Dunbar.
I don't condone speeding, but in those days there were very few cars and no speed cameras!
So what is your earliest memory of cars that no doubt helped set you off on your obsession - well that's my excuse anyway.

Two cars spring to mind, both of which were my dads.
The first was a prov spec mk3 5 door escort and the second was a sierra RS cosworth
Nothing special happened with either car but cause of them I've had a love for old fords

me and my sister fighting out for the front seat in our mk2 belmont. that new car smell (even if it was 10 years old), always stays with me for some reason.
the other one was watching our 1984 cavalier "ride the waves". put simply we got flooded and a bus went past created a wave and the car lifted 3 ft. never damaged it and started and drove fine afterwards. had loads of cars before them but that was the first ones I remember.

Going round a big roundabout in Norwich 'enthusiastically' strapped in the back of my Dads bright green Alfasud mid/late 80's sometime.
A conflicting memory was my mums pale blue mk2 2dr Escort negotiating a similar roundabout in a similar fashion...(albeit on the other side of Norwich)

Sitting in my dads mates montego turbo which had 'turbo' written onto the seats, was red. Always wanted one since!! Lol
We had the MG but it was a non turbo if I remember right, which is odd as now I'm not sure if they ever made an mg montego non turbo???

I have a memory of 'helping' my dad fix some part of the front suspension assembly on one of our cars, I think I was about 5 or 6 years old. There was a stubborn stud or lug or something that he couldn't get out, I told him to attach some mole grips and them hammer the grips for more leverage. It worked and I remember thinking "wow, I solved a problem that my dad couldn't do!" But in reality, looking back it was quite deliberate on his part. He was probably helping me to develop mechanical understanding. A good teacher and a talented man is my dad, my love of fixing/ modifying/ designing and building things (especially cars!) is something I'll always be thankful to him for.

Staring out the window of my dad's Sierra but not being able to really see much, just telephone poles. Kept that car for 12 years and only died because someone wrote it off.

Dad's bright yellow Datsun Sunny estate. I'm moderately sure he picked my brother and I up from Infant school in it and being very surprised, because up until then he'd had a bike and sidecar and normally, we walked home because it wasn't very far.

scoobypete superb mate, my Dad had a brown Avenger estate too and you just brought back some nice memories! My first real recollection was helping PDI various brand new Simca rallyes, Hillmn Hunters, and Avengers as kid in the early 70's...wonderful. Can still rememeber the 'new car' smell! Happy Days!

My mum's Austin Metro, with its brown and beige hound's tooth interior and those vinyl panels at the side of the back seat that warmed up HOTTER THAN THE SURFACE OF THE SUN in the summer, burning my legs.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

And thus my mind is reminded of the impossible temperatures the black vinyl seats in Dad's Datsun reached, especially when I was wearing those horrible '80s shorts, you know the ones that were pale blue with a white trim... funny how those aren't cool in retro hipster fashion land.

My Dad was in the RAF and was serving in Egypt, around 1954/5 I guess (before the Suez crisis) My earliest motoring recollection is probably the family being collected in a Standard Vanguard Estate. and being driven to the airfield for the long flight home to the UK. The luggage followed in a matching Standard Vanguard pickup. . Reading everbody else's recollections makes me feel very old!

The Old Man had one of these - SBA 312 and we used to drive from Manchester to Grange-over-Sands every 3rd Sunday to see my Grandad. The journey became easier after they opened the Preston by-pass (now better known as the M6)!!
