I did a quick search to see if this has been mentioned before, but nothing came up, so I will continue. I'm off to Florida in April, and thanks to the crappy rules of the DVLA, my license expires after 10 years just before I go. I got the usual moany call from my wife at work last week reminding me of the fact, so I jumped onto the DVLA web site to see if I could download the renewal form to save me traipsing to the post office. Hunting through the site, I couldn't find a link to the form, but did find a link stating - Renew Photo License on-line. Intrigued, I delved further. To sum it up. If you have the following you can get your photo license renewed on-line :-) Applied for a passport in the last 5 years (they use the passport photo for your new License) NI number (To join the government gateway site) Driver number License number (bottom right on the back of your photo license) Another License number (this time top right on the green counterpart license) Debit/Credit card, so they can shaft you for £20 Well, I completed the on-line form on Wednesday afternoon expecting the usual 6 weeks DVLA delays. You can imagine my amazement when my new License dropped though my letterbox on Saturday morning Less than 3 days turn around. Looks like part of the Billions spent on Government IT projects actually works My guess is that no human actually had anything to do with this application ;D The only thing is that the license starts from the day you apply, and not from the day the old license expires. Hope this info helps you guys. Cheers Fraser

My old paper licence is valid until 2027 when I'm 70. Why - because I refuse to have a photo licence unless they are free as the one I've already got is still 100% legal. Why spend money every 10 years when I don't have to Paul h

If you have to send your licence off for points, or a change of address, you will not get it back.
And no, you don't get a choice in the matter anymore. Its destroyed and you are told to apply for a photo licence.
So don't move, or get caught speeding!

Glad you're sorted, a shame this is one of the very few good-news tales I've heard from the"joined up thinking" systems we now have My old paper licence is valid until 2027 when I'm 70. Why - because I refuse to have a photo licence unless they are free as the one I've already got is still 100% legal. Why spend money every 10 years when I don't have to :)Paul h +1 totally agree with you on this. The only downside so far - I don't have a current passport and opening a bank account now (in practical terms) needs photo ID The poorly trained monkey highly trained customer relations advisor at the front desk in the bank suggested I get a new photo ID or renew my passport, then they will consider letting me put my money into one of their savings accounts I.O.U. a nice pic of a retro car from earlier times (before the "The computer says no!" era) - once my broadband is fixed sent via dial-up, powered by an underfed and overworked hamster

Not quite true :-( If you move when you have an old green paper license, you have to pay for a new photo ID one. If you then move within the next 10 years, they will issue a new photo license for free with your new address, but with the same expiry date. The expiry date is on the photo license part not your license to drive. Hope this helps Cheers Fraser

For what it costs photocard driving licence is a bargain. C'mon £2 a year? Lets raise an army and bring down the government over that one... The number of times I use it as proof of ID, very handy. Reminds me I must check when mine expires, I know its soon.

You got to wonder why you need to renew every 10 years -when they'll acccept a 5 year old passport photo?
Interesting -if you do it the other way -the photo must be less than 3 months old.
Explain that...

Don't come over here it's 75€ for 10 years but that includes a medical, photo, etc. Price goes up the more classes on licence !
