The underside of the trailer is rusted (as expected on a 25yr old trailer) and I want to stop it before it becomes completely rotten. I think the main problem is that its made up of two pstrips of metal that are folded and bent into an odd shape... meaning i cant get to it with a wire brush or anything.
I was wondering if there was a chemical I could spray into it that would break down the rust leaving clean metal?

There are loads of things avalible. Best one ive tryed so far is Por 15 'Metal Redy' but it wont go thrugh heavy rusting.
Ive heard you can use brick acid and then wash it off after all the rust has gone. anyone tryed?

Adam chemical express "brick mate" although i fear its been dulled down so it doesn't melt skin anymore. it gasses as it works giving of a green smoke, its evil. I used some rust removing chemical on my moggy LCB, it worked better than I expected. can't remember what its called though, DUH!!

www.hitek-ltd.co.uk/metals.htmI use the VCI422 stuff at work and it does a great job. We brush it on leave it for 15 minutes, wash it off and you are left with nice shiney metal. Normally the stuff we use it on has been outside for a year and its rusty and pitted but not really scaley rust as your trailer will be. Can be sprayed and dipped as well. Costs around £75 for 5 litres, but its low acid content and fairly environmentally friendly which is one reason we use it as the pipes we supply to the steel plants are used for pretreatment of steel and have to be clean and free from impurities. Brick acid is only £10 for 5 litres, never tried it so don't know how good it is, but at that price it might be worth a shot, read the MSDS sheet before you start fecking about with it though. How about getting it shot blasted, must be some places local to yourself that will do it relatively cheaply. Failing that find either a paint with rust inhibitors in or a treatment that can convert it to black ferrite.

Brick acid is excellent I used it on springs and wish bones, problem is getting hold of it and using it safetly Arco, Cromwell tools , Syntec all do an acid descaler. We use quite a bit of this for cleaning the floors at work (well 10-20 litre a month anyway) Not that difficult to get hold off. I am sure Jewsons and Travis Perkins will also do one. They may not be as good as they old `unsafe` brick acids but should do the same job. Might have to bring some home and try it.
