Good Evening all... I've finally plucked up the courage to ask you guys a few questions.
Facts of car:
1989 Ford Escort 3DR XR2 Engine (1.6 CVH) Running an XR2 Round Top TDLM Carb.
I'm basically in need of a new exhaust. Would an exhaust from say either an Injection 1.6 CVH or an RS Turbo (not sure if they're the same?) fit?
I'm not looking for anything OTT, just something to smooth out the air flow and give me a nice subtle tone.
I've currently got a single box type on there now but it's falling to pieces and the only ones that keep popping up are for either XR3i's and RS Turbos...
Thanks in advance.
H.

Also,
Could someone share information on MFI/EFI?
I understand that the MFI (Mechanical Fuel Injection) engines weren't the best set ups as they didn't have computers (ECU) calculating how much fuel is needed (used a metering unit? good for >240BHP) but I'm wondering if there are any similarities between my standard carb engine and a MFI or EFI for example?
IF I need another engine, would I be able to use an MFI/EFI block and just mount up my carbs etc or are the blocks/head different? (I'd think the head/block on the EFI would have holes for sensors etc?)
Thanks once again.

LAST (but not least), would a cabriolet 1.6 (again, i'd imagine they would be injection) exhaust fit?
I know the interior differs but not sure about the engine/underside.
Thanks!

As long as it bolts up to your existing manifold then 3i or turbo exhaust will fit but don't expect anything out of the ordinary in the noise department unless you lose/omit a silencer or buy a performance one. efi block has a hole for flywheel sensor but will still work without the sensor if you fitted it to your car. Piston CROWNs are different shape for carb engine cvh against efi but again, will still work in your car. There are variations on the 1600 cvh block/head but in short, as long as you don't try to fit a low compression turbo engine to your car then I can't think of a good reason why any of the other units wouldn't work for you.

not sure on cabriolet exhaust. They have strengthening beams running front to back behind the sills. I would guess they are the same but don't hold me to it.

Yes it should fit. My XR3i was fitted with a 1.6 Carb exhaust from the downpipe back. Raspy was one way to put it!
When I fitted my new system onto my Cabby the XR3i system was the same as mine.

The injection Ex manifold is a tubular job and good for a few extra ponys, the turbo system will fit but not the manifold and downpipe as they are obv ment to have a turbo in between them Cabbys have longer tailpipes same as the estate cos they are longer but most aftermarket systems will just have a clamp on extension to make up the differance.

Thanks guys! The hunt continues... What about the MFI engine? My XR3i had the MFI engine (assuming you mean the K-Jetronic equipped engine from your statement) so it should be compatible .

three types generally of 1600 cvh. turbo which is flat topped pistons with a hemi head (think half a tennis ball) The early engines had a hemi head and pistons with like two raised bits on them. Blocks say 81 and 84sm on them and heads are 81smxxxxx. Known as pre lean burn Late 86 on engines say 86sm on block and 86sm on head-lean burn engines Now this is where I get slightly foggy but I'm sure xr3i mfi 88 on say 88sm on block and also on head 88sm but are essentially the 86on lean burn engines. Efi blocks are basically lean burn with a crank sensor in them. The combustion chambers are the same but the inlet ports are a funny shape for the injectors. You could put a lean burn mfi head on an efi btm end. The xr3i has a better looking 4 branch ish manifold and a single box in the downpipe.
If it was me I'd probably try and put a xr3i complete manifold-tailpipe exhaust or a xr3i system on it. Xr3i system is bigger bore. Good g*d why do I have all this junk info sitting on top of my head.....loll
