I'm gonna post on behalf of Will here, we have an issue with this car that is a little bit difficult to solve.
When driving along, at low revs, now and then it will try dying on you, like a fuel starvation problem. Its just like if you pumped the accelerator pedal fairly fast, throwing you backwards and forwards as the car loses and regains power/drive.
We have replaced the fuel pump, and just to eliminate ignition problems have checked for a spark and replaced all ignition components (plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor, coil). It has a decent spark.
Fuel does seem to get to the inlet at a decent rate, and also we have replaced the stupid bike exhaust with a standard polo item (which cant have been helping matters)
On the list of next things to check, are:
Fuel lines - the car has been stupidly lowered (now back at a reasonable height) so we're wondering about a crimped fuel line under the car
Injector might need cleaning?
Something weird like a cold start valve stuck open?
We cant seem to determine if it is under fuelling or over fuelling - the cutting power would tend to sway towards under fuelling, but the fact that it tends to do it at lower revs, and sometimes giving it some beans tends to cure the problem and regain power, would tend to sway towards over fuelling.
Just wondered if anyone else had any ideas?
Steve

That car looks familiar? was it purchased from someone off the forum? Good luck with it though looks like a cracking motor hopefully you'll have it ship shape in no time

I'd say it has dirt in the fuel system, which is coming through and blocking the injector. My MK1 polo did the same thing as you describe. I stripped and cleaned up the carb (i know mk3's are injection) and blew through the fuel lines, and the problem went away. Hopefully your problem is the same, as is an easy fix

sounds like an spi injector/throttle body fault to me. Where did you get the leather seats? they look just like my old ones that I had in a blue gt coupe. they were calibre seats welded to polo subframes

If it is cutting out whilst driving along and then regaining power/ jumping about etc, my money would be on the Hall sender in the dizzy. They are the root of most evils on these cars and prone to failure. Might be worth swapping over the dizzy with Steve's one (when he ain't looking) just to prove the point. Personally I doubt it is a mixture problem, but you can confirm this by checking the colour of the plugs - white/light grey = lean or black/sooty if it's running rich. Good luck with.

Check the fuel pump and filter again, I've had a pump failure in every one of the 6 Mk3's that I've had!

if its a carb engine which it look like it could be you may have some curse word inside the carb, so could be worth having a look

I had major problems trying to get my 1300 SPI to run right, ended up binning the lot and fitting an MPI GT motor, runs great now ;D
