Either hammer-on a smaller sized imperial socket (a rather expensive option if you don't have any old junk ones lying around though) or weld on another nut/scrap socket to it. I prefer to weld on another socket, as there's VERY little chance of it rounding off

I'm going to changing the track rod ends on the Golf soon. While I was changing the front bearings I had a little check to see how easy the track rod ends (not lower ball joints) will come off and...........the nearside retaining nut (which you have to slacken to get the track rod end off) is seized and already slightly rounded off. I gave it a squirt of WD and carried on with the job at hand. The nut now awaits me..... I'm planning on heating the nut up and using Molegrips. Has anyone got any better methods? Be sure to change the lock nuts too as they'll almost certainly be seized on the tie-rods.

Thanks for all of the help!
The bolts came off easy enough and to re fit them i used a welding clamp to push the joint into the fitting and they done up easy enough.
I will be replacing both track rod ends soon though so i will have to do it all again soon!
Yes, yes it is, have a star what is on the end of a track rod end? A BALL JOINT and you'll never guess (what rob? tell us, tell us) on the end of a track control arm there is another BALL JOINT ok lessons in sarcasm and the names of car parts over with for the day
i'll rembember that when I'm in the big smoke i can call em ball joints, however in Gloucester when you go to buy new ones i'd suggest people ask for track rod ends unless you wanna end up looking like a tard

A really good often forgotten tip when putting the balljoint back together is to use some brake cleaner and clean the faces of the taper before assembling. This cleans the grease off and allows the taper to lock nice and tight rather than spin when you do the nut up. (you will obviously still have to put a jack under the balljoint to put a little pressure on it, but this tip will help the taper lock.
