I have a few questions to ask - the first one relates to my daily which is a mk4 golf which is standard ride height but I managed to catch the sump on a pothole in derbyshire, the cortina is going to be lower than the golf and the sump does sit low within the car which is a concern on speed bumps as this pothole thing is just a one off so what are my options? a winged sump with the same capacity or do i consider a sump guard but I want the car to have a clean look I don't want a repeat of this! Before all that though I was at the Donington museum which was great fun and whilst I was there I picked this up for some retro wall art! to keep myself busy I have started to look at a few other jobs, I bought this radio a few years ago it was untested but told that it is working but I figured I'm not too fused about the radio side but I could get an ipod or something to run through it the next question is I have 3 wires coming out of it a black, white and purple but I have no idea which is for what? as far as I understand it to get a phono jack wired to the radio I need to add some wiring to the volume knob is that right? has anyone done this?

As a guess, black is ground, white is power and, purple, perhaps the light to illuminate the channel panel.

I had a feeling the black was an earth, the other two I wasnt sure if one was a live and the other being an out for a speaker
I will open it up this weekend and see what other wires are inside as I thought there would be at least 4 wires

It turns out I was wrong after putting my google fu skills to the test and as it turns out the body is earthed and the purple is the live! now this leaves me with a dilema in the future because as far as I understand these things (which isnt that well) this radio is Mono - could it be wired so that 2 speakers are used or will 2 drain the system too much and it will be quiet? well I did a ghetto lash up and with a screwdriver ariel I got some crackles when turned on but I figured that there is little going on MW and LW but as long as it gets power its onto the Ipod conversion!

Hi again Jim, good progress since I last had a look! Regarding the sump, why not just make and fit some form of skid plate?

Can't wait to see more progress, hopefully all welding done then?

The plan is tohave all the body welding done I am not sure whether to have the doors sorted or to hold off till we start painting as some better ones my turn up as I would love to have opening 1/4's on the front at least

A quick update - basically she is still away on holiday but on the plus side I haven't had any expensive phone calls!
In the meantime I am looking into what changes I need to make to go fuel injection but I need a few questions answering;
Has anyone used megasquirt? an opinions and advice would be great and has anyone built their own?
Would a pump and swirl pot be ok or do I need to baffle etc the fuel tank?
Any tips for making a bike throttle body inlet manifold?

I've no direct experience of Megasquirt, but it is very popular with the MX5 tuners, especially the FI guys, with a rep for ease of use and good VFM.
The latest Enhanced MS2 is pretty sophisticated and has been radically updated in the last few weeks, with features such as OEM immobilizer compatibility, valet mode, advanced launch/flatshift modes, and more.

I had thought about launch control but the From what research I have done If I use the Ford EDIS system I am unable to use a rev limiter?

I still haven't got the car back so I am off to see what the story is with it as it should be ready by now. Whilst the car has been away I have been rethinking what engine to fit which is a right pain in the ! The plan has always been to make the car as useable as possible as I used to drive it everywhere as I enjoyed driving it but as much as I liked the 1500 that was in it it had problems on a run and dropped oil like a BP pipeline! I have a few road trips planned and my commute does include motorway driving and stop start traffic After the engine was seized I did have it sorted out but I still need to buy some more parts to finish it but I know by time I have done the stuff I would like to do I could have built something that is much easier to live with - so my question to you all is this: Original GT - as it left the factory strapped to a 2000e correct and capable of town/ b roads but struggles on the motorway Original Tuned - the engine as I'd like it with EFI, A2 camshaft strapped to a 2000E gearbox probably 120 bhp at best but difficult to drive long distances <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/wKpd1uUuDDU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> All ford parts bucket I have had thoughts about a zetec either 1.8 or 2L they would both work well and preferably running bike carbs and a 4 branch exhaust 150/160 brake strapped to a type 9 I would need to make some engine mounts and a transmission tunnel which may make the centre console difficult to fit <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/OU4Gejel3lk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Toyota 4AGE I great little 1600 with TB's from a 20v and a 105 speed exhaust - not sure on power but as I understood or dreamt it was based on the BDA and I would prefer it to be on a T50 gearbox which is a bit tricky to find but they are smaller than the type 9 which means less chopping about which is what I like <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Iq2SnpVPsMM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Nissan SR20 For big grin factor basically and turbo noise! <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Hs-zAyrY44M" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> whats your toughts? also can anyone help me with engine mounts!

The original engine isn't that bad to live with is it? How about a tuned 1500 with bike carbs (not sure if it'd work because of the exhaust manifold in the way)? The real problem on motorways is the 4-speed gearbox, and it has a huge hole between second and third too. Replace by a 2000E and you'd have a winner!

I went to see how the car was getting on and it is nearly done with a few pieces to finish before I can have her back! the drivers floor has been sorted after I made a mess of it and looks like its been there the whole time the inner wing has been plated and is looking the way I wanted it to minus the surface rust mind! there has a been a problem with the NS jacking point and the front chassis leg where the repair had been done as it had been bodged in the past which was to be replaced but the repair was done in a way that it has let water and other stuff in so its rusted from the inside out not the best pic by the way old vs new the old jacking point the other major problem has been that the shape of the spare wheel well panel doesn't quite fit as well as it should leaving a big ish hole where water and other stuff from the road could enter the car so the panel will need to be modified to suit the car better but it should'nt be an issue

After several weeks and a wedge of cash the Cortina's welding has been finished which is great as I can start trial fitting stuff before paint which is odd becasue I haven't seen it with parts attached to her for years! I'll get a few more photos later, I will fit teh bonnet at boot lid properly too so that she looks a bit more like a car
