I'm not sure yet, I'd like something more road based than performance but not ditch finders spec Do you have any recommendations? I went for Yokohama A539 175 60 r13 I like the size, but as for the quality, they’re poor. They lock up really easy and sound like Hollywood film tires, they squeal like crazy when turning. I do like the look of the 60’s racer tires with a bit more sidewall but have no idea what to go for. Sorry for being no help whatsoever.

jonsey You're more help than the folks on the owners club facebook page! That's a dark and difficult place! The loom is coming along nicely albeit taking longer than I wanted - the rev counter is still with the chap refurbing it, so the loom is in and unwrapped because I wanted to make sure it worked before wrapping and I could get the routing how I want it. I'm happy with the fusebox and relays now - much neater and can be easily removed if/when I want to upgrade it. The engine has run for a while but when I had the exhaust manifold off I put a new inlet gasket on and the carburettor has been stripped and blasted out with cleaner and air. I'm now getting all 4 plugs getting fuel which is much better than how it was when it all came off. The crank pulley I was using had 2 timing marks as it had been modified (not sure why) so I've reverted to a standard pulley which I had laying around. The distributor seems to be delivering spark and I have a constant 12v to the coil and the leads are connected 1243 but still no fire - it's got me stumped!

Jim - If you have spark at roughly the right point and fuel, it should run.
Start with the basics. 1. Have you done a compression test 2. You have the leads on in 1-3-4-2, is this in the same direction of travel of the dizzy. 3. Is the dizzy definitely set roughly to tdc of number 1 cylinder and not 180 degrees out. 4. Is the coil live fed at both ignition live position as well as when turning over.
It will be something small and niggly - keep going.

I had the same issue as no4 ^^ on my GT. On the mk2 the coil is fed via a ballast wire. On cranking, this switches off and the coil is powered from the solenoid. I’ve removed the ballast wire as I’m running electronic ignition and hadn’t connected the solenoid to the coil off the bottom spade. It would not start while cranking but would try to catch as you left go of the key as the coil was powered again. I’m not sure if the mk1 works this way though.

I meant to post an update sooner bit I've been distracted by the possibility of being able to get on with the Cortina after struggling with the old loom and the engine issues. Last Saturday broady came over to help, I stepped back and let him go over the basics of fuel, spark and timing with a fresh set of eyes. After a few hours it was running and much smoother than it had ever run - so what was it? The timing was 20 degrees out and the clamp wasn't doing its job - because it had cracked the distributor! Looking at the clamp it turned in on itself at the pinch bolt I'd also woubd the mixture screw out way too far - because I was worried it wasn't getting enough fuel! Instead of it being 2 turns, it was 7.5! The cortina starts easily and runs smoothly all down to what broady has done and I'm thankful for his help - I owe him a few beverages when we can go out and play properly! Now I can carry on with testing the water tightness of the Cortina and getting the interior sorted!

Great that you have managed to sort the problems and you can get the rest of it back together.
Well done.

With the success of a running engine I treated myself to a pair of 6J JB lotus reps to go with the 7's I bought a few months ago. I'm making a push now to get the Cortina road legal so as a mojo boost I figured I'd get some tyres and do away with the stunt wheels that make the car look far worse than it actually is. a quick comparison with the original 4.5" wheels had me worried! I was a tad pensive getting the wheel in there so figured I'd drop 2 nuts on and put it back on the floor to check - it's tight but I think I can skim the arch lip and get a bit more clearance. I love the look, I've tried to keep the body level but the lower profile of tyre in the front arch makes it look like it needs to go lower which it could be I think I run the risk of it being awful to drive or smashing the sump into the ground!

Looks fantastic - glad you got the wheels sorted! What size tyres have you gone for? I wouldn't worry about clouting the sump - mines a bit lower than yours and I've never had a problem with the sump (although I clout the exhaust front box on a regular basis!) good work! Cortinaman

Cortinaman Thank you! I looked at price of banding and figured it's cheaper to get the JBW's and I'm not ruining an original set. I've got 175 60 r13 up front and 205 60 r13 for the rear which are tight! Yours is looking tidy! It's good to know I could drop it further - how much did you drop your rear by? I did away with the front box so I should be safe!

I think it's got 1.5" lowering blocks on de-arched Lotus springs, so probably about 3" in that picture. I did have 2" lowering blocks which looked cool but a bit impractical!
