Good progress. Your braver than me. Prep and paint scares me. Jonsey - Come on you chicken - paint & prep scares you but yet you will chuck the Escort sideways into a bend at speed with the gravel flying everywhere - paint & prep is easy - it's just about having the confidence to do it in the first place (I know - it's a lot easier said than done)

Just a few updates from the last few weeks: Engine bay I finished rubbing the filler down and put a fresh coat of epoxy on. Even though I looked for pin holes the primer did a better job and I found this lot... Generally it looks good though and these pin holes are just frustrating but fixable. Dashboard I hacked it! I was very careful about this and have kept the metal removed so I could weld it in should I change my mind. I then rubbed the whole thing down and sprayed epoxy I used the oil heater to get this to cure as it's been cold in the garage but I got brave and threw down another coat of high build on the interior and dash. I've also bought a larger gun that I wanted to try too which made this job easy. A slight cockup but I thinned the primer a bit too much and produced a few runs but it'll flat out - it's a learning curve! Jim - Bang on track with this - learn on the engine bay / interior / boot areas with the spraying and you will have a good idea of where you need to be on the external panels when you get round to spraying them

I suspect there were plenty of runs in the less obvious areas when it was new anyway, when I started flatting the interior of our minor I was amazed how many runs there were in the original paintwork.

That I have in spades 😁. Taking expensive products and turning it into dust in the hope you'll sculpt something beautiful out of it again and again, that's brave.

Thanks Chris, I have a lot of respect for yourself and others who do bodywork full time! It's never ending but I like seeing the car progressing except pin holes - they suck

It's easy - but very tedious!

The cortina door hinges have a hell of a lot of adjustment which enables you to get them just right but that also makes it harder to get right if you know what I mean. On my mk2, It took me a while to get them right so I plan to drill through them into the pillar so I can line them back up by placing a drill bit back in.

Could be worse. I discovered my bodyman hammered the shi*e out of any high spot on my car and plied on the filler.... Will you pull the wing or push the door to get it nice?

Jim - Just a lot patience pills for door fitting - Has Jonsey states there is a lot of adjustment both horizontally & vertically on the Cortina - sometimes you may have to revert to shims in order to pack the hinge off the door or the pillar - work on getting the horizontal swage lines in profile with the front & back wings first then sort the gapping out after - a wide bolster chisel is good for applying pressure against high / low areas when used has lever between the panel apertures - the upper frame for the window is easy to manipulate into alignment - wear in the hinges will not help at all and you are better to spend some time correcting this before hanging the doors - If you are still struggling to achieve equal aperture gaps the last resort is to either add to or reduce the panel edges on the doors - apertures & gapping were never perfect on these cars when they left the factory and the build quality was far reduced from where the vehicle production market has been for the last 20 years - however nothing looks worse than a restored car with over tight or over wide aperture gaps (it's one of the first things that I look at on a car) - if you need any reference pics for altering the doors let me know - Chris

They are the same hinges as the Corsair.
Any vehicle with badly aligned doors bonnet or boot are annoying.
Good progress Jim.

Its a good idea to fit the seals when setting the doors, the pressure can change the way they sit, the weight of the glass and fittings can also cause them to drop a little.
Also when they were built it was quite common to use brute force and stratrgically placed blocks of wood to twist or bend the doors to improve the fit, I saw this still being used at Dagenham 30 years ago.

Thank you all for the advice - I've had a crack at the doors again today and I think I've got the fit as good as I can without seals. The front door had the bottom rotated clockwise (looking toward the from of the car) bringing the lower section in, the photos below is the percussion adjustment that I needed to do. I did this with a bluntened chisel and a rubber mallet The other end need pulling out as it off by some margin I've tried to move it forwards as best as I can but I need another pair of hands. There's something not right with the frames The rear door needed more very long as the gap was huge! I got this gap to a similar point as the front but I had another issue! I couldn't open it as it clashed with the front! The position was sorted and the gap to the front door is consistent which is odd as the rear gap isn't as tight as I'd expect with some tightness. As they're fairly close I'll hold off doing much with them till the other side is on and look at getting some seals and finishing the job off
