i see what youre saying, and it makes sense. tbh the person who explained it all to me way back wasnt an engineeer, but knew what he was doing, and his advice has always served me well, nice to know its right but not neccessarily for the reasons he said! the 45 deg thing is still right for the torque thing though, he told me to imagine having a braker bar on the crank nut, and as it meets the mount it shoulf meet it flat, so theyll be at 45deg.

Yeah, that breaker bar analogy's pretty good. I was mostly just trying to say that the cylinder arrangement won't really effect the forces on the mounts.
It's also worth remember that it's actually rotating around wherever the output is, with whatever the torque at the output is rather than the flywheel torque, which like you say is usually in line with the crank nut on RWD stuff, but with FWD or rear/mid engined stuff it'll be around the diff outputs, and with a fair bit more torque because of being after the final drive. For instance my minis engine's getting mounted on normal RWD style mounts at about 30deg, but because of the transaxle the engine will actually be lifting up under acceleration rather than twisting.

I really liked the look of the mount that Foose built for the Lotus Europa on Overhaulin.

This was how I did mine, if anyone want's any ideas... Transferred the block mounting template to plate, bolted a hefty washer to the rubber mount on the chassis, then chocked the engine into position and tacked the block mounts to the washers. That gave me a pair of templates like this... I then used this to cut a card template to match the position of the washer, cut that out in plate and tacked it to the block plate with the washer still in place as a reference. This meant the mount was fractionally higher, but gave a little allowance for the squash in the rubber mount when all bolted up. That looked like this Then I simply cut some more plate and tube to create the stiffening ribs, as per my post above. Joe

heres a slightly simpler but also more complicated one on a zetec conversion i did. i couldnt move the mount on the car fore or aft, but the breather box was in the way of the mount plus id have had to extend it up or forward a long way to pick up on a third point rather than just use the two bolts at the bottom. so, i binned the breather, capped the hole off with the plate, which served to triangulate the mount up the block, then welded on a barb to act as the breather to connect a hose to, which runs up to the top of the engine bay and has a aftermarket filter on it.
