follow up. Normally I run the ZS with open trumpets (yes I know!). Now three of he trumpets look the same after some use but one looks different. Number 2 (from the left) does not seem to have aquired the same slight decolouration as the other three. It also picks up a fair amount of dirt and petrol which the other don't. Hopefully you can just see in the pic. I've compression tested the engine and all four cylinders register 200 psi, whicj is probably good or at least consistent. Any ideas why this one throat should be different?

Probably the one with the air leak I know you know but it's a bit hard on the engine running with no filtration at all

Mmm good question. I'd say that one isn't spitting and the other 3 are!
Never run filters myself and it doesn't seem to do the engine any harm. Done about 35,000 miles now with Webers and no filters.

So in fact THREE are leaking/wrongly set and only one is fine. engine sounds a bit off too. One guy commented that it sounds like a pump engine. OK the vac advance is sealed off and it is set for max power for track etc use so I guess the idle may be a bit rough, although this has since been somewhat disguised by the increrqase in idle revs.

Not at all, the idle circuit is completely seperate and unrelated to the chokes and it has its own dedicated jets and mixture screws. These are the four vertical screws at the base of the carbs. Then you have a progression jet to match the idle circuit to the main jets which control what happens down the barrels.
Definitely sounds like they are all leaking, it's not unusual because like we said in the other thread the sealing washers are frankly curse word and a lick of silicone will solve it.
They don't go out of tune, there's nothing to go out of tune because the jets are all fixed. The only thing you have to check every now and then is the balance between the two carbs. On the idle screws once set you should count the number of turns in so that you can reset them if needed but mine never move.

The only thing you have to check every now and then is the balance between the two carbs. blob of paint on the adjuster threads always helps to stop them slip out of adjustment

coolio so my weekend is planned. Get syncroizer and balance carbs. seal gaskets with silicone sealer and mark all the bits for future ref. Doesn't sound too hard. I guess the spitting that Jonny69 refers to is not an idle issue but higher up the rev range. Mixture issue?
