Right having been on another road trip across Europe 2 weeks ago (keep meaning to post piccies of some of the vehicles up). I also called in to see a friend in Germany (at an Air base ...hence the number plate) who owns this: It's a 1991 Golf Cabro, although 1991 as it's a Cabro that makes it still a MK1 ...yes? Now the problem with it is that previous owner has put the teeny weenist Momo steering wheel on it so a Standard one is required and this is our (2 part) question - Firstly should original/standard steering wheel for Golf Cabro look like this: (MK1 GOLF) or this: (MK2 Golf) Reason I ask is because it's a Cabro is it classed as a MK1 or MK2 with regards to interior due to it being a newwer model? Second question is the steering column spline size, for the steering wheel ...we have been informed there are two sizes ...small or large (simple enough), it appears MK1 and early 2 Golf has small and later Golf has large. Again although car is 1991 I wounder as it is MK1 shell (due to being cabro version) may it have earlier column (small spline) Thanks for any help

It should look like the top one, although both will fit and i though all mk1 + 2 splines were the same, you'll also be able to fit the wheel of most audi's and polo's too, aswell as late beetle ones (post 72 or something) Mike

Top grammar tips! Bought = purchased. Brought = relocated Lose = misplace/opposite of win. Loose = your mum

yes he did, and it was the business ;D ;D, the change point for the mk2 was around 89 then they went to the bigger splines.

and i though all mk1 + 2 splines were the same Nope, MK1's and early Mk2's had a smaller spline, later MK2 had a bigger one. I found that out when I bought a Mountey wheel of a F-reg Mk2's golf for the Jetta, only to find that its hole was too big....

So it looks like (due to this one being a 91 'MK1' cabro) it's going to be trial and error.

But the bigger spline is only a collar over the smaller one And removable... D'oh, didn't know either of this, I could have just bought a new collar instead of just forking out another £40 for an early GTI wheel....

there is an adapter available if you have the steering wheel with the big hole, it is an VW OEM part.... You can also use a puller to remove the adaptor if you have a wheel with too small a hole
