For a first insurance policy i would get a parent to insure it and get yourself as a named driver, once you are over 18 get your own policy but on a car under 1000cc as this will reduce the insurace lots. I started with my stiletto and got insured for around £600 as a named driver. I then moved on to the tuned imp totally stripped out etc for a similar amount again with my mum insuring it and me as a named driver. For my first policy i got the charade although this was 150bhpish i had it insured with all modifications declared for just under £1000, it was low as the engine was 993cc, makes all the difference. The current policy on the imp is iwth adrian flux i think, and its a policy where i can change what ever i like on the car for just the admin fee (around £20), its costing me £500 even though I'm only 22 and the car isnt quite stock J

Not the most sensible suggestion. If you don't declare the mods you will still be driving uninsured, despite having paid your premium. The first time you get pulled by the traffic boys you are in deep.

Its all changed so much! In 94 i insured my first car, a 74 bug, dechromed and slammed. It cost me just under £600 and i could do ANY mods i liked no matter how extreme. Feel sorry for young drivers these days.

The first time you get pulled by the traffic boys you are in deep. Indeed that's a real dumb idea. As you will leave the poor sod you ran into (one of my friends and once, me) having to pocket the repairs and the hike in premium. If I see anyone do that I will personally make sure you don't drive your car. [/pet hate rant] If you really can't afford the insurance either get a smaller car, do Pass+ or don't modify your car - in hindsight I wish I had done this when I had the chance (the P+). Ho hum.

Try direct line, you can insure the car under your parent's name, put yourself as a named driver and still earn NCB's. Why didn't they do this three years ago?

I thought you could get a classic policy from when you were 19. Whoever my dads insured through insures 19+ on a classic policy

Try direct line, you can insure the car under your parent's name, put yourself as a named driver and still earn NCB's. Why didn't they do this three years ago? GF has just finished summer working for 'calm down dear' insurance company, from what shes gathered these NCB's are only use with DL's own polices and not transferable to other companies. Just what i have heard, like, so best to find out yourself but it does still sound like a good deal eaither way! Long time since i got first insurance (1996), i advise people to build their first NCB on an ins group 1 or 2 car TP or TPFT then move up, id did the opposite and went for a 1.3 festa ghia, insurance loved that. best bet is to ring around when you ready for a change of insurance and modifications, don't be a victim of hard sell like i nearly was this year where i was mis informed, do the research and record the calls if need be...

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Yeah that's always a good point get the names of who you are talking to, if they sound particularly unsure get their surname/ask to speak to a manager/superviser. It might sound ace when they promise you the world but if that's not what the policy offers you're up a curse word creek with no paddle.
