Well the spak-o-matic in the capri is smelling worse for wear. Once it's past 50-60mph there is the distinct smell of clutch slippage (burning smell) which comes and goes. Do autos have conventional clutches or are they constantly engaged, if so what's the friction part that gives the go?
Fankoo.

Some are driven by belts and some are driven by clutches.
clutches wear out.
Check the fluid. If it smells eggy then its a good chance your clutches are going.

It's been a long time since I was under a Capri but I think the best bet is to remove the bottom pan, drain all the burnt fluid out,if there is ANY fragments of anything in there you have a shot tranny. If itr's Clean, with NO bits, get a filter kit and change the internal filter, you should get the fluid cooler lines flushed out, fill with new fluid. What i would also do in your case is buy some Lucas Automatic trans stop leak fluid. It works brilliantly on old slipping trannys.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

Yeah probably about right, I get little drive on it's own in D as well so it seems to be that way. Hope it doesn't let go before it gets down to bournemouth.
p.s. thanks mercmad, that sounds like a stop gap that I could try before the long haul.

I'm not familiar with the stuff mercmad recommends, but I might need some of that myself. The clutches can be worn out with out depositing much if any stuff in the pan. The fluid should be red like blood or cherryade or whatever. It should smell nice and feel viscous (you will get it all over your hands). If its black, brown or yellow is sticky or gritty or smaells bad then the fluid is gone, but changing the fluid may not help you, it is usually a symptom of something else.

i don't know anything about Capri boxes ;D but if it is a belt driven box, then these belts can be tightened.... though if the oil smells burnt, then it could be too late.... i have just refurbished an VW autobox, which is belt driven and i was lucky.... though i like driving cars with automatic transmission, i hate to repair/remove them....

Well whilst flushing out the coolant today managed to spill a fair amount of ATF - glad to say it's bright red and gloopy - huzzah! Which only leaves the internal thingy madgigery as the culprit.
Tits.

No, so I'm hoping it might be low fluid level leading to belts slipping.
I'll flush it out today and fill it up and see what happens.

low fluid level will cause slipping, I assumed you'd checked that first!
remember that autobox fluid usually has to be checked with the engine running and everything up to temperature

don't we all... never realised autos used anything other than torque converters?

they have a torque converter up front then theres a clutch pack or set of clutch belts for each gear. Theres the gears obviously, then the valvebody, governer, actuator, vacuum modulator, all sorts of magic stuff in an autobox...
