...the Renault Spider? ok, ok it may be a little bit modern for some people's taste, but it is a stunning looking car built to more retro ideals - low weight, mid engine/rwd.... and you could get it sans-windscreen Did it fall flat on its face in production as a french sports car? Was it just too expensive? Are there any still around? I seem to remember it had its own 1-make race series that used to be on very early on channel 4 on sunday mornings or similar Big photoDeutsche Brochure

They were only ever planned as a limited production run, weren't they? Not sure. I imagine the success of the Elise killed it

I see one running around Potters Bar/Hadley wood every now and then. Stunning car and far better IMO than the elise (which is a total luxo-pansy-barge in comparison)

I'd totally and utterly forgotten about that car! I thought it was only ever a concept car, but obviously I'm wrong!

Great looking car but the Elise killed it off early
The aluminium spaceframe chassis was made by the same company as the Elise's but renault chose to weld the aluminium which made it too heavy.
Glue is the future ;D

(which is a total luxo-pansy-barge in comparison) Are we talking about the same car?

well I like it on Project Gotham racing on my xbox. When I race my daughter she likes the elise and I take the spider and whup her ass. Oh I forgot to mention she's only seven. Am I too competitive?

if I'm right i spotted one of these on the road at the weekend a blue one with the small race screen, cant recall where tho, i remember when they used to race with the btcc in the nineties as part of the support package, used to be quite close racing iirc, not as interesting as the classic touring cars tho ;D

Being a Renault, it probably wasn't designed to last more than 5 years. Good car but nowhere near as good as Elise.

Nope, nowhere near the elise standard. My dad looked at one when he bought his elise and it just wasn't nimble and agile like the elise, although it had more power. Solution.... Elise with a Motorbuild race package for less than a Spider!

But but but! the undeniable fact is that the Spyder (the proper one without the windscreen) is so much cooler than the Elise...

......or a badly excecuted fat overweight and slow galic crunching copy of an Elise. But but but!! its got no windscreen,.. and Elise's are driven by the Computer Consultants and Systems Analysts who can't afford a real super car and are too scared to drive a TVR .......
