So, this is one of those 'tell me about' threads that seem oh so popular on these forums - I thought I'd give it a go!
I've recently been attracted to SAABs - 9000's in particular, and I've done some reading on the subject, but I thought you knowledgeable types might save me some time and tell me some general things to look for...
Thnaks in advance!
Matt

ive got a 9000 carlsson (early type) and can say they are awesome! however, i really would recommend going for a 900 turbo... great cars...
they do silly milages but gearboxes are weak (will jump out of second and reverse) and the rear arches always go...
the carlsson wheels are worth silly money too so if u can get a cheap one you are quids in

My mate is running about in my old 9-3 s Turbo, it's on about 184k now and still runs effortless. The main thing to look for is split bulkheads, the rack bolts direct to the bulkhead. Some dealers will do the work F.O.C., some wont. The SID units always lose pixels but are easy to DIY repair and the heater fans pack up but they aint a bad car. It was the colour that sold it to me and the fact it doesn't look like an X reg car.

TypeIV cars, twinned with the Fiat Croma and Lancia Thema. So you could build a Ferrari V8 powered one.......

Do it!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ive just bought a 900 t16 turbo and cant reccomend one enough! My mate had a 9000 with 234k on it a few years ago which is what got me thinking about them but the 900 is far nicer in my opinion. Its in the top ten best cars ive owned and I'm already looking for another one because i like it so much! or maybe a 99 turbo for the weekends, my t16 for trackdays and a 9-3 for everyday smokin..........................................

I too have been thinking about Saabs in a rather unhealthy way of late. What puts me off is, on paper, it looks like they're not very economical. (I know, I know, but I've got a mortgage to pay! ) Is that true? I was considering a basic 2.0 9000 or "old-shape" (ie '80s) 900....

Saabs are cool. I have been tempted by a couple of 9000's, but I have to say I like the 900 and earlier 99's a lot better. u can tell ur sat in a saab as soon as u get in theres just somethign about them You can tell a new Saab driver too, as they're sat in the car for bleedin' ages trying to figure out how to get the ignition key out ;D

I got 33mpg out of my 99 GL on a 1119 mile round trip. Several hundred of which was over 85mph More economical than a mini? No. More economical than a jag, merc or similar? Yes.

I have a 9000 CS turbo. It's the low pressure turbo, without an intercooler. It's a solid, reliable and reasonably quick car, but handling's a bit soft, the sportier versions are better apparantly. I've replaced the centre box with 3" pipe and made a 3" straight through back box. Cone filter fitted and bleed valve to turn the boost up a bit. It gets about 29mpg which is similar to when standard. In my opinion, my brother's Rover 820 Vitesse is a nicer drive and quicker with similar economy but less well made.

The 9000 aero is actually more economical than some lesser saab models on a long run because of the better mapping/turbo/tuning and the hight gearing.
On average a turbo Saab of the retro variety will give you low to mid 30's consumption. Early 9-3 models are a bit modern, but you can get the Izuzu 2.2 TDi varient for smoking arround in.

I bought a 1991 Saab 9000 2.0 SE hatchback on a J reg out of the local motor auctions for £170. It was an immaculate metallic green and had national trust and caravan club stickers in the back windows so obviously an elderly owner. It was a Sytner trade in dump, no reserve. It had 160K on the clock or so. It ran like a swiss watch. Turned out to only have 3 owners. Never a moments trouble. Very comfortable, felt nice to drivbe, not all FWD and horrid, more like a RWD car in a lot of respects. Build quality felt good, nice interior, nice feel to everything. Like an old Volvo or something. Like a tank really.
I was a definite fan.
It had very slight rust starting on one wheelarch and sometimes it jumped out of reverse if you backed up a hill. I lived on just enough of a hill for that to be a slight pain. Was fine if you held the lever though.
I sold it for £350 after spending the summer using it for holidays, commuting and parts chasing. I put 15K miles on it without a murmur.
Only problems with it was that it wasn't exactly a "lively" car, but I didn't care. It was smooth enough to drive and made progress.
Other than that the fuel consumption was not that great. Don't think I ever got 30 MPG out of it even with long cruises. 26 - 28 seemed to be about where it was at.
The Saab's with hyphens in their names are also cheap but are more Vauxhall than Saab, the dynamics and reliability is about the same. Swedish guy who uses an Oldsmobile forum I use says half the cars he see's broken down in Sweden are modern Saabs, the other half are Opels.
Can't go wrong with a 9000 though IMO.

Seen several cheap 9000s lately, just as I'm thinking about getting something solid and reliable, which I will LEAVE ALONE and get Spacekadett to service. Cars don't seem to work as well once I've "mended" them.... ;D Much as I love the Sapphire, I'm scared it'll turn into a project - which is why bro sold it! Then I borrowed my little bro's E30 320i auto at the weekend.... It certainly got me thinking! German or Swedish, that is the question!

Saabs rock ;D And people don't automatically assume you a Mr Two Hats and cut you like they would in the Beemer. "nice" people drive Saabs, Slowly. Yeah, right. Names like Bill "Ferrari Killer" Jones, John Winter, MarkE, Pete Tandino, Matt Faulks, Eric Van Spelde, Wiley Coyote(George to friends) spring to mind as slow safe nice drivers (learn those names and if they behind you in the pit at a track day, move over ASAP). As does Mr Stephen "Thank you your honour for confirming I was only doing 99 and not banning me" Fry.
