I hope someone can shed some light on this as I only bought this yesterday and was hoping for a little longer without problems.
The car is an 8valve, and I'm lead to believe that the box is out of a Corrado (albeit, converted to cable clutch).
Last night, whilst still getting used to the car, I lost the ability to select gears. The gears are there, but its almost as if the clutch isn't being activated fully. It has a manually adjustable cable and Ive tried it fully adjust/fully backed off and everything in between. The only way to get it in first is to start the car with it in gear and then it'll drive with a bit effort to get it into the other gears. But It won't go back into first without shutting it down and repeating the process.
I really hope whatever is up with it can be sorted without resorting to removing the box. My back isn't up to it and this was supposed to be something I could just drive without spannering too much straight away.
Please help....

The clutch wasn't slipping before hand but now Ive messed with the cable adjustment it might be. Looking at the receipts the clutch was new last summer, so I'm hoping its something less involved that a new clutch...

Yeah, all the gears are there. The box feels quite positive when the engine is off.

I'd start by checking the gear selector bushes near the bulkhead,a friend of mine had a similar problem a while back

I had a good look at them last night, and although they feel a little notchy everything is attached and moving freely.
Like I said, the gears are all selectable when the engine is off, but twhen its running its like I'm not pressing the clutch all the way down.

could be like my polo when I came back from the MOT, the RAC guy said my gearbox was broken, turned out that the gearbox mounting under the car came loose. I could get some gears but not others, so I thought it was the linkage that had shifted, instead the centre has come out of the gearbox mounting that was under the car its a long shot and I don't know how the grearboxes are mounted on the golf's

So, Ive just taken it around the block. I started it but couldn't get any gears (other than reverse and that went in with a grind and then the car crept backwards) so I started it in 1st and was able to very carefully (or with abit of force) select all the gears while driving. It still feels like the clutch isn't being pressed enough but it also slips under power aswell. So its neither fully disengaging for me to change gears nor fully engaging to stop it slipping.
Otherwise, its an awesome car.
Flippin' 'eck.

I'm gonna get a new cable tomorrow anyway as it got to be worth a go for 12quid, although the current one looks brand new. Ive just double checked and a new clutch kit was bought in July last year and I assume fitted by the previous owner not long after. I really do hope its not a clutch/box issue and more a cable issue.

If you know someone with a ramp it's not a huge job to get the box off but still a last resort I'd say!,might well just be the clutch by the sounds of it

A common problem is the centre of the release plate cracks & the clutch actuator arm then goes through it & it doesn't matter how much you try & adjust the clutch it will still drag & not go into gear. I've had this happen to me on a golf convertable I had & from what i've heard its not an uncommon problem with them! Tim....

Cheers Tim. Is it possible to buy the plates separately? 'Box out job then? It does look like it'd be too much hassle to do, although I think I'll just take it to the garage over the road to sort and they can MOT it at the same time....

I would go with a release bearing issue or the releasing fork.

Righto, all sorted now.
It seems some swarf had got in between the clutch and the flywheel, and dropped out when the clutch was removed. New clutch in, bolt it back up and away we go.
Bah. Lets see if I can keep it in one piece for awhile.
