Ciao Retroisti Was on a mini-vacation to Skåne (Southside Sweden) for some R&R and a relative who is a VW dealer let me use a real cool toy, a 2007 Golf TSI, it has the brand new 1.4L Twincharger motor with both turbo & supercharger and a claimed 170hp, that little sucker was a hooooot to drive and I think with some tweaking it could be a mini-killer and if they then decide to stuff it in the Fox with the DGS gearbox, radio, electric windows & air con delete option and 16" steelies we are back to the 70's "delete options" "plane jane" performance base cars..... Is this "The next black" in the VW communtiy? If you ask me, I (sadly) don't think so but it would be fun to see what can be done with it..... Petrol direct injection and twin charger The unique feature of TSI technology, which Volkswagen is the first and only manufacturer in the world to offer, is the combination of petrol direct injection and a twin supercharger. The twincharger, a mechanical supercharger in conjunction with a secondary exhaust turbocharger, boasts one of the best output per litre figures of any production four-cylinder engine, at 90 kilowatts or 121 hp per litre of swept volumeDP says: If someone drops one of these on my doorstep it'll go into The Shop Hack ASAP......

That's cool, although didn't Nissan get there first with the march super-turbo? Delete options are the way forward

Yeah its very cool, they are thinking of making a 210bhp version to go in the scirocco (sp?) concept car. The March SuperTurbo was 930cc with 110bhp as stock so 118bhp/L, funky wee car! Ive personally been wanting to make a twincharged engine for years, and just as i get the chance, every curse word has started to do it! I may not even be the first twin charged imp J

There was a single turbo 3.9 EFI Rover up for grabs near me, didn't go for much money. That'd make a nice twincharged lump, probably. It was a very low CR, at least. My urge to build an Over lump is growing Blownimp, even if you weren't the first (which I doubt, your excellent piece of engineering will be finished soon by the looks of things at the rate your going!) it'd still be the best and that's all that counts ;D I think the VW engine is a real sweet bit of kit and it's nice to see manufacturers working on high performance small engines for a change - I know there's lots of sporty small twin cams and so on out there but getting real muscle from such small capacity, that's a new-un and good to see (barring of course the Miras and various other bonkers Daihatsu efforts!) I intend to draw up plans for a high revving, extremely small V8 that'll make the right noise yet be nicely packaged, reliable and economical! I'd love something like that so it looks like I'll have to make it!

What i need you to do for me MrBo11ox, is get a mazda 929 diesel with the comprex blower, as they were only available on the continent. No one, and i mean no one has been playing with these things, i would have no need for a turbo and a supercharger as it does the job of both, with none of the drawbacks! As for this engine, its a great idea and def a step in the right direction, but they are all still missing the point. They all have the capabilities to produce cars that can do over 100mpg with swift performance and high safety. check this out - www.loremo.com/index_en.phpOne of the problems is the manufacturers all want to be first to be second, they don't like stepping into the unknown, but as soon as someone else does it they want be right there in competition. Its good to see VW taking steps into the unknown, but its just not enough, they are going to have to take steps but at a faster pace. J

very cool, but seems rather complex to me. I can think of easier ways of getting 170 BHP. How does the MPG work out compared to a decent 2.0 2.2 NA?

I had a go in one and it did everything it said on the tin - it was amusingly fast and really economical. I'd hate to have one fixed at main dealer rates though!!

When I first ran the 2.4l DOHC in my Datsun 510, with the engine wired as it should be from the factory (with lambda and closed loop) it'd happily do 43mpg on a run cruising at 70-80mph. Sometimes, I think a large capcity, torquey engine in a small, light car can work well as it has little work to do.
Boosted small capacity engines are more of a sales gimick than a truly useful tool. The ability to say "hey looks, it's on a one litre" makes the manufacturer seem more environmentally friendly than they would if they were sticking 2.4l engines in small cars. That fact is, if you boost an engine and shove in twice as much air as it would consume n/a, then you need twice as much fuel to go with it.

this is true. But if you do a lot of city miles and the motor idles a lot then a smaller capacity lump which is running off-boost should use less fuel.

Theoretically a boosted smaller engine is more efficient than a bigger unboosted one though – both thermally due to less heat loss into the cylinder walls etc, and mechanically - less friction and so on.
However it will no doubt wear out faster and then require a new load of iron and aluminium ore to be dug out the ground to make its replacement, sooner.

This is where someone will pipe up and point out that a higher internal rotating mass will carry a car better up an incline thus needing lower throttle opening and using less fuel... Alistair's Law of Performance states that you cannot make horsepower without burning fuel. There is no further technical data involved in this undisputable law of vehicle physics. Its all you need to know. I know that the 345 BHP LS1 Camaro is good for over 35 MPG from its 5.7 litres. I could never get anywhere near that from a 177 BHP 2.0 Celica. Go figure.

This is where someone will pipe up and point out that a higher internal rotating mass will carry a car better up an incline thus needing lower throttle opening and using less fuel... Yeah but you're gonna have to burn more juice before getting to the hill, to get your heavy rotating mass spinning properly aren't you.
