Drove the oxford down to Brum on saturday to see my folks and a few friends, J11 4am 60mph, oil pressure dropped to zero and got the old death rattle..... uber curse word. Not sure what exactly had gone, but it sounded like everything with a bearing in the engine was about to fall out onto the road. Very noisy and very scary, especially at 4am.
Managed to nurse it home at 40 mph, then 30, then 20 (off the motorway) Had a nap at my folks and when I woke up I took the now rattly old farina round to my mates yard where several cups of tea later we had flushed the oil with diesel and refilled and swapped the canister oil filter. The oil filter was choked SOLID with gunk and at the bottom of the filter bowl was what looked to be concrete, but was infact just compacted crud. There was the reason for no oil pressure then.
I felt a bit embarrassed driving about with the oil filter in that condition. I class myself as having reasonable knowledge of things mechanical but I still caused this engine to die due to my neglect. I'm suprised it hadnt just seized solid on the m6, which would have served me right.
Anyway the flush and filter renewal managed to raise the pressure enough to get me the 60 miles back home at 45-50 mph with the occasional rattle and constant low grumbling. I think the big ends have gone along with the mains. Mate up the yard said he could here a little end too (what DO they sound like?)
Moral of this story is CHECK YOUR OIL!! although I'm sure most if not all of you do that anyway.
Anyway...... anyone know to a pre 72 MGB engine and overdrive box?
