1997 Seat Arosa Automatic. Green/blue colour. Taxed and MOT'd until August 2012. 85000 miles, verified by old MOTs. Recent exhaust, front brakes and front wheel bearings, good tyres all round. The Bad BitThe driver's side rear wheel bearing failed just before Christmas, this will need moved on a trailer. I don't think it can be towed on the driven wheels, even when it's in neutral. UPDATE: I've ordered the bearing kit. It's on Gumtree for £300 and I've been offered £280 by some local "we buy cars for cash" mob who want to grind it up and send it to China but I thought I'd see if anyone here would do the bearing and put it back on the road. The insurance expires on Friday so I'm open to both cheeky and insulting offers.

You can tow automatics in neutral at slow speeds, for short distances, without disconnecting the prop.
But won't the rear bearings on these be like most VWs, and thus, dead easy to sort?
Bargain. GLWS.

But won't the rear bearings on these be like most VWs, and thus, dead easy to sort? People keep telling me this but I had to give up on the front and get it trailered to a garage. This is now not even my second choice car so I'm keen to see it in the hands of someone who will treat it better than me.

Totally understand, but I've never wanted to tackle front bearings - rear ones, I've done Scirocco and Golf (well, okay, same car) quite happily. And I did an Astra's "sealed unit" hubs, too - quite enjoyed that. Rear bearings on FWD cars are nothing like as vile as front ones with driveshafts and nonsense to deal with.

As above, I've ordered the bearing kit.
Come over, give me £250, use my tools, drive home in it.

You'll probably need a new stub axle too. If the bearing has totally collapsed it puts quite a lot of bending force on the end of the stub axle.

There's a guy coming to pick it up tonight so I'll probably not tell him that when I give him the bearing and the car. Thanks though, makes sense that the bearing failure would put lots of pressure elsewhere but I wouldn't know where to start ordering other parts.

They're not expensive, about £15 from a breaker or £70 new.

Two prospective buyers who didn't show up this weekend and two offers from RR'ers that are less than the scrap man offered... The future does not look bright and rosy for this fella. I'm cashing the tax in and ringing the scrappies tomorrow morning. If someone gives me £150 before the scrappies come I'll be well happy.

I wish I was in Edinburgh, I'd have had it - but it's too far (300 miles each way, would cost as much to move as it's worth!). Can't believe a small, cheap to insure, VW related car with such a minor fault is being so overlooked.

You know they'd charge me the balance of the postage AND a fee for collecting it. I have put the word about as one of my friends can only drive autos, but she's no nearer - might know people who could move it though.

You know they'd charge me the balance of the postage AND a fee for collecting it. They'd probably lose it and it would be on the BBC in three years in an amusing "And finally..." story about unclaimed lost parcels. Is this still available? If it is I will 100% collect it at the weekend? Or friday evening? PM'd you Amigo but I'm afraid I'm out of time on this. Tomorrow is d-day unless I have some folding in wallet*. *it's going into my special lady friend's purse, who am I trying to kid?

No, they would lose it, eventually find a cracked hubcap, and still charge you the full umptythousand pounds in unpaid postage
