Just recently my car has been idling funny, just a little nothing too bad, just whereas it usually ticks over at 1k, it dips and rises, just enough to change the note of the exhaust and wobble the car. I don't want to start ripping the engine apart... What would you suggest I check first (what is it 'usually' )? Plugs?

What car is it? an e30? Normally a split or leak in the intake boot causes this, mines doing that now, got one but haven`t fitted it yet.
Hope this helps

air leaks first and foremost. i take it its an e30? m20? does it make any difference removing the oil cap with it idling? if it dosent you already had an air leak before you took the cap off (inducing one). check everything with a rubber hose. then the breather tube under the inlet manifold. theres an o ring at the top and bottom any oil leaks here?

Sorry it's a mk2 Golf. Haven't changed my username since I had the E30. It's a 1.8 carb.

Split mounting rubber on the base of the carb then. Try wobbling the air filter with the engine running.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

base gasket is a good place to start does the carb seem wobbly on the manifold?
has it still got the pierberg 2e carb or has someone already replaced it with a weber conversion? the systems on the pierberg are quite fussy. its not a bad carb but not many mechanics understand how it all works and quite often it gets replaced by a weber.
your lumpy idle is it hot or cold? how fast does it tickover hot and cold? does it seem to gas up while warming up?
theres three main parts of the auto choke; the bi metal spring, choke pull down unit and the wax stat. if one of these isnt working it wont be running right.

Thanks for the replys, however... I'm an idiot, removed a vacuum hose to remove and clean air filter..never re-attached it! Sorry for wasting time.
