I know that plumbed in systems are the dogs' esp for motorsport cars, but what make & type should I be looking at for a handheld?? It's on a road car which gets a little bit of trackday use

Apparently the most common type of car fire results from the electrical system, although I've only been told this, I may be wrong, perhaps more than one would give you great protection.

I've heard that the best ones are Halon-filled (green) as these extinguish all types of fire. I've got a cheap dry powder one which sits handily in my boot (never got round to fitting it ), although I wouldn't like to tackle anything but a minor fire with it. This was from Halfrauds a couple of years back.

Of course that's probably a good thing to have, most car fires are relatively minor to begin with and can be stopped when they're still minor.

Halon definetly Causes the least amount of damage itself (no residue) and should extinguish most fires.

Halon definetly Causes the least amount of damage itself (no residue) and should extinguish most fires. I thought Halon extinguishers could no longer be bought due to the fact they are CFC's (or CBFC's (Also containing Bromine) and therefore are destructive to the ozone layer... Tesco's have a small powder extinguisher for £10 at the moment

Hmmm, could be that the Greenies have banned Halon - I would have thought that a car going up in flames would make more pollution that a Halon extinguisher though! There's also CO2 - not as messy as powder but I dunno how well they work or anything

It's one of those things that no-one wants to happen to anyone but lately I've heard of a few car fires & it got me thinking. I've seen the powder ones for £10 - £15 which I was going to get but wondered if any others were more suited??
Cheers for the input Guys, I will have a further look into them all. ;D

From the world wide web.....
''Halotron I extinguishers, like carbon dioxide units, are for use on class B and C fires. Halotron I is an ozone-friendly replacement for Halon 1211 (which was banned by international agreements starting in 1994). This "clean agent" discharges as a liquid, has high visibility during dischage, does not cause thermal or static shock, leaves no residue and is non-conducting. These properties make it ideal for computer rooms, clean rooms, telecommunications equipment, and electronics. The superior properties of Halotron come at a higher cost relative to carbon dioxide.''

Its a good idea to have an extinguisher in the garage aswell. Although I suppose you could pull the one out of the car if its close enough. I have heard about a guy who had two mint XR4s in his garage, one caught fire as he was working it and he ended up losing both cars and damage to the garage aswell.

My car went up in flames a few weeks ago . I had a old small halfords extingusher which was worse than useless. When I have rebuilt the car I WILL be putting a full plumbed in system. I am kicking my self for thinking or worrying that my car would catch fire, if you care about your car I would suggest you get the biggest/best fire extingusher you can afford.

Sorry to hear about your fire, Spitty. Its a nightmare situation that I haven't given enough thought to really - I know that the pissy little dry powder extinguisher in my boot won't put out much more than a fag end. I'll go looking for a bigger, better one asap!

Sorry to hear about that. That's why the Imp's getting two largeish extinguishers put in it at the very least. Being an Imp I can't help worrying about the heat in that engine bay at times.
