Right in responce to my other thread, about my broken rocker arm..... retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=techni&action=display&thread=120015....I've decided to give the "Don't take the head off" approach, a go. Basically to remove the shaft/tube that hold the rocker in place I have to remove 7 (out of the 14) head bolts, how dodgy is it in terms of disturbing the head gasket? will it cause any problems and would it be better to use 7 new head bolts? Will add photos late Thanks Robin

I recently did my first car head gasket so am of course now a complete expert ;D I purchased new head bolts but they had those funny star heads so went back to the factors and the money exchanged for a 6 pack of lagers. The original bolts looked in good untroubled (no stretching or signs of stress) and with the pug 954cc lump being a non high performance engine I had no qualms about putting them back torqued up FT. As for the only removing a few as long as you undo and do in sequence I'd be willing to bet it would be fine. Worst case you can go back in anyhow so just keep an eye on it That's my no pro* 2p anyway. * disclaimer

Personally I'd be tempted to undo all of the head bolts in sequence to make sure you release the pressure evenly, then put the ones not in your way back in nipped up only enough to prevent the head shifting while you work on it. Then when you're done torque everything back up, using new bolts if they're stretch bolts, and the old ones if not.

It's an attempt to save money as the head gasket and bolts come to around £100 for the sake of replacing a £12 rocker arm. However the last thing I want to do it is, try and do it the cheap way and end up with head gasket or head bolt problems.

where are the bolts you've taken off in relation to each other? as in are they all from one end or bunched up in the middle etc?

i ment do it twice as in you take some head bolts out change the rocker and then have to remove the head I'm afraid your just going to have to bite the bullit and take the head off i wouldnt replace the head bolts if i was doing it just the gasket

I know people who have drained the coolant, removed the head bolts and reinstalled without disturbing the gasket but this was only on basic stuff like swapping the cam box on an 8v vauxhall.
i'd guess that the risk of breaking the gasket is probably going to be too great if you need to be working on head as form what i've seen taking the rocker shafts out can take some persuasion.
although I guess there's no harm to try it, worst case you have to put a new gasket on afterwards, it's only time you lose (and the fiddling with doing the rocker in situ in the first place) - personally i think i'd take the head off, but i'm all about making life as easy as possible nowadays.

Thanks for everones advice
