Just a question really but does anyone know the uncompressed free length? (Hoping someone has one in the corner of the garage....
Can't find anything on the net and I'm not really keen on buying a new one just to find out!

I can measure a standard set of e36 rear springs if I can find them. You may already know though, they have coloured markings on which as far as I can tell determines the spring rate/stiffness but the heights are all the same.

ok got to apologise here the standard springs aren't in my garage so i can't measure them until the wkend, apex -60 rears for an e30 325 coupe are 18.5cm uncompressed tho if that's any use at all.

Hmm have to google that and see if I can find information on what colour represents what spring rate

OK so the lowering alternative are probably too short for what I need Std Monza rear coil springs are 23.0cm uncompressed and need the shock absorber disconnecting to alllow the trailing arm to drop right down and the they need a little pinch with some spring compressors to eek them out The ones I currently have fitted will pop right out if the shock is disconnected and the trailing arm dropped right down but they are about 1cm smaller uncompressed length. Picture of the two compared (outer 2 are the ones that slightly lower the car v inner two are stds) I used to have a set that dropped the ride height way to low but I gave/lent them to a mate and he's since had one break a pigtail so going back to them isn't an option - you could fit them without disconnecting the shock just a pinch on a spring compressor I guess the answer is to measure what gap is (between the two spring seats) that I have on full drop without disconnecting the shock absorber so I can know what the minimum I can fit in the gap Currently the car looks like a dragster all father ted up and nose down

I can measure some more E30 piggies if necessary. Is straight swapping them for 2.25" coilover springs an option? I was going to do this on the back of my 3.5 touring when converting the fronts to coilovers. Others run this successfully too, including coilover sleeves to adjust height. As they run inboard they need to be a higher rate than normal rear springs, the black springs are 6" and 550lbs rate. Go to Faulkners/Rally Design and order what ever length/rate you like.

PicturesLooks like a nice solution, although is there enough travel in that spring? It looks like the spring will go coil-bound just before the bumpstop's hit to me, but I'm only going off judging it from a picture. Edit, having had another look it actually looks like it could well be fine, very hard to tell from just the picture, but it's something worth thinking about for the Monza, as those strait 2.25" springs will definitely have a longer compressed length than the pig-tailed standard ones.

Hi Robin (and Rob) That's exactly my concern - coil bind to easily and limit suspension travel which would be bad for handling if you hit a bump at speed - like a kerb....... I've measured the available space and without disconnecting the damper unit 20cm is the space I have available - maybe I could get away with 0.5cm less but any less and I'd be worried about chucking a spring out without some sort of retaining strap
