Seeing as Nitromors is now as effective as having a kitten cough on it, does anyone have recommendations for paint stripping?
Needs to be chemical methods rather than mechanical, as it's for wheels that have nooks and crannies that tools would find difficult to access.

Sounds like a job for media blasting TBH. Steel wheels are far more forgiving for sand and other common abrasives than are alloys, obviously.

I needed to remove some original paint from a Series Land Rover rear body tub. No undercoat had been used but it still resisted common paint strippers. The strongest from motor paint factors was the best that I could find but still struggled and needed scrubbing to loosen. Even then I had to paid £25 for 5 ltrs so not cheap. Turns out the stuff I really needed was the type of stripped used on aircraft and horrendous price. My advise is get them blasted and save yourself a load of work.

Not wanting to teach to suck eggs or anything, Dan, but have you had a go with Nitromors then wrapped in plastic bags/clingfilm to stop it evaporating off? It still requires some effort, but works an awful lot better than without wrapping.

That partially stripped MX5 bonnet down at A52 was done using the Nitromors + clingfilm technique as a bit of a test and whilst it the paint didn't fall off, it softened it sufficiently that it could be easily removed I think it was left for half an hour or so; certainly not much longer as Bruce was worried about damaging the finish of the aluminium.

The clingfilm slows the evaporation of methylene chloride, might help a bit. Bodyshop stripper might well have more of the Good Stuff than glops sold to the public.
You can buy methylene chloride in bulk, apparently the way to use it is in a tub with a layer of water floated on top (stop it disappearing). Chuck bits in to soak. Not nice stuff to have around though.
Original Landy paint will prob survive the apocalypse. I got through 4 layers on my Lightweight bonnet easily, until the OEM layer. Not even raw acetone would touch it... let alone paint strippers. Strip 'n clean disc was required.

id also say blast em if you can.
ive just thrown some money at sorting out my blasting cab- changed the sane for proper aluminium oxide, new gloves, new persex lid, and set up extraction with an old hoover. well worth the effort, ive just done a very grotty lotus turbine (very fiddly on the vanes)- one of the ones bruce had. took me about half hour and its immaculate.

Russman, all I know is at least one person on the MIG forum uses it. Buys 25 litre drums I think, from what I remember it's not masses of cash either, but is rather nasty to have around. edit to add e.g link1link2

Always dab Nitromoors on not paint it on, then cover with plastic or put in a black bag, this stops the vapours escaping and the reaction is more fierce, if you have no joy use por strip from FROST it is amazing stuff

Agree nitromorse has changed, stripped an entire cortina with it, won't touch the factory bm paint under the bonnet of the escort, even scratched up to give it a key. i may have to resort to fire

Its certainly crapper than I remember. Tried some 'Enviro friendly' stuff too. Worse than water. Useless.

I've always been content with Wilkinson's own brand paint stripper, which is effectively imitation Nitromors. I find it does a better job than the Nitromors but you do have to leave it on to do it stuff for between 5 and 15 minutes. Cheap too, which is always a bonus. Can be removed even with a soft bristled brush and cold water... never use hot water, the fumes will kill your nose dead.

I stripped some wheels a couple of years ago with automotive Nitromors and it worked a treat, I didn't wrap them or anything. I think a lot of the good stuff from back in the day has vanished because we need to save the planet.
