Hello all,
My project MX5 1.8 (1995) wouldn't start yesterday morning and neither would it jump start, voltmeter said 8.56V across the battery contacts, So I just put it down to the fact its been sitting throughout the winter and the battery has lost charge (start it once a week for good measure). Today the parents came round with their discovery and meaty jump leads and managed to get enough power into the system to start the engine....... then horrible squealing and smoke from the ancillary belt. The alternator had seized and the belt was slipping on the stuck pulley. You can turn the pulley with a spanner (not freely however) so Its not "Seized" as in stuck solid, just the belts friction isn't enough to spin it.
Now what I need to know is, short of getting a replacement.... is there anything I can do to get this unstuck? Or on the flip side of things, the belt might be passed its best.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
All the best,
Richard
