a short tale about a week ago my battery went flat so ran the extension lead out, disconeted the battery and plugged the battery charger in.about 5 hours later i went outside to find all the cables melted together and smoking well. turns out that if you don't pull a extension lead fully out heat builds up in it and can start a fire,i was only useing a 4amp battery charger as well and there where no cuts in the cable. i have done this many many times in the past with no proplems. browsing readers rides i see lots of pics of people doing the same as me and would hate to think of someone loseing there ride/garage for the same mistake that i made also i was not useing a rcd breaker not sure if this is the right place to post this.

Mate had the same happen. If I hadn't seen it myself I wouldn't have believed a low current though a coiled wire could cause so much heat / damage. I've got several extention leads of differing lengths and far more useful than the big coil. Old washing machine wiring make good extentions of a couple of meters Paul H

True, if still wound up, they act as a coil and heat up, seen it many times be safe and not lazy people

TBH it's a well known thing (at least I though it was) but only on high consumption? had my PC on a coiled up lead for 8 years and appart from the odd magnetic field given off i've had no problems at all, you sure the charger wernt fooked ?

I think all of mine tell you on them to never use them whilst still coiled. Obviously a bigger core diameter and lower current draw help.

I've had this happen before, using an 12v RC car charger running off a 240v PSU and a 15m extension to the mains plug. Luckily I could smell the soft melting plastic before it went up.

Mine has a lower amp rating when coiled and a thermal cutout.

OOps!! You form an induction heater that way!!!
If you need to coil excess, you shoul coil it in a S on the floor. That way the magnetic fields cancel out and it dosen't heat up!

TBH it's a well known thing (at least I though it was) and me, learnt in secondary school physics ;D Although i did have to tell one of the sainsburys i deliver to about it, they had wound theirs around a metal bar and were charing 4 electric trucks on it
