ok heres the gist. my e series engine in my 1970 morris 1500 (think morris 1300 with a maxi engine) had seized due to sitting for a year. its a low miles engine with 1000miles since a full reco. i tried diesel, and atf down the bores, to no avail, so i removed the head. still no joy. 5 weeks later its now freed off...
my questions, would you pull the full unit or just do a top end rebuild? i have a vrs kit.
does anyone know the head torques and if the bolts are reusable. i have the manual for the car but it makes no mention of this?
cheers.

Friend had a 1600 E Series in a Maestro HLS that cracked the block. Very difficult to find a replacement so we converted to 1300 A Series just to keep it on the road. I therefore think E Series are getting scrace over here. Personally I'd strip the engine down because I'm a "belt and braces" person. After all the head gasket is the expensive aspect of a gasket set so a bottom end isn't going to cost much. Wouldn't need a complete strip down to give me piece of mind - mainly I'd be concerned about confirming crank shells undamaged.

The bolts will be reusable, BL were not into anything as advanced as stretch bolts back then. As for stripping it down , i would base my decision entirely on the condition of the bores, if they look like they are in good nick, then you have most likely got a healthy engine and I wouldn't other stripping it down any more, i'f just make sure evberyhting was nice and clean and bosh it all back together.

thanks guys, the bores still have hone marks, and the pistons have clear +0.40 marks. so i guess its rebuild time. wouldyou get the head skimmed? its flat by straight edge? its iron btw.

If the pistons had previously seized into the bores how are you going to check the rings aren't still stuck in the piston grooves ?

From experiance i would say pull the pistons and check for stuck rings, theres no reason to think the head would be warped is there? I wouldn't worry about having it skimmed.

if its only done a few mile since a rebuild its worth stripping it down and check the bearings, its not going to cost anything other than a gasket set but if you don't check it and it spins a shell its going to cost more
