went to take a gander at my fathers flat today - he moved out a year ago and lets just say hes not in the country at the mo - and to suss the viability of hauling up his micra that was supposed to be on the drive (we're house-sitting -occasionally- lol) arrive down and car is gone, neighbours say a 'pickup' arrived one day recently and lifted it. my mum called my grandmother, who lives near the flat, and she hadnt lifted it or heard about it. no paperwork or missed calls/letters from any licencing authority or police. SORN'D recently and on a private (council estate) drive, not pavement or road edge, right up beside the flats. Called it in to the local plod as stole after this but no-one could have legally lifted it could they?

i take it your father is still the registered owner? technically, as reported on various "I've found xxxx in a layby, can i have it?" threads it is possible to take possesion of someone else's car, but the DVLA will write to the last registered owner and make the prospective owner wait 6 weeks before deciding that the last owner has vanished. So you should have a letter asking to get in contact if this is the case, assuming the address held on computer is correct. Might be worth a look at www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/ and click on 'Vehicle Enquiry' - if you put in all three bits of information (registration, make and then the document reference number found on the V5) it'll tell you when the last V5 was issued - if this is recently then someone has found a loophole and taken possesion of the car. You'll need the V5 as without the reference number they won't give you the last V5 issued date. More likely is travellers have lifted it for scrap value, after watching it for a few weeks and realising both the car and house rarely see human contact. Either way it needs reporting as stolen, just on the 0.0000005% probability someone will get nicked for it.

Have been a couple of things in the past where classics (evn rough parts cars) have been taken.
Owner is away, truck with Hiab comes along and hoists the car on the back with other scrappers. Drives away. When owner gets back, neighbours say "Sorry, thought you must have been scrapping it, no didn't see a company name or get a reg number". Bizzies say "Have a crime number, no never heard of that before, sorry we can't give anymore time to investigate, talk to your insurance".
Car gone, never heard of again, probably weighed in because steel is worth money again, or broken for parts. (or combination). Nasty curse word really. Sorry fella.

This is 100% worrying. If a BMW x5 or some such tat was lifted, i'm sure there would be an enquiry!
Big sticker to put on cars: " if this is seen on the back of a truck, report to police", which is great until you break down!

That car is clubed by now, or shredded, maybe even baked bean tins!
If theres no tax and it hasnt moved for a while it will be in the sights of the scrap man.

Same story, here in OZ,but if the council tows your unregoed car, they hold it in a yard, then advertise the details. You can then go and retreive it at a huge cost.I went to look at an alleged Merc 500SEL which had been abandoned.Obviously a ex Hong Kong taxi it wasn't worth anything,( it sold later at the abandoned vehicle auctions for $1000....) but thre yard was full ( about 10 acres) of late model goodies ,all went for a fraction of the true value ,including a 2000- model Ford fairlane with latest modualr 302 Cobra power. My mate bought it to repower his Mk2 Zephyr...$800 for a good running complete limo. I would say the car has been stolen ...probably a Kia or hyundai by now.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

Yeah, but would the councils in OZ come and tow the car from your own property, this is happening on people's drive ways and front yards, not on the public road or pavements/footpaths.

Ive come up with a fool proof way to keep the scrap mans hiab away from your off the road motor, fill it with old tyres, no way will they touch it then!! Tyres are like kriptonite to scrap dealers.

Brilliant idea. Or put a fridge in it. You could probably arrange to have someone bumped off easier than getting a fridge taken away. I`m not joking.

i just ring the council, and they come round later that afternoon to collect the fridge. Or that's what i did last month when we got a new one. Cleverly they've worked out the more they collect, the less end up in laybys or on the train line.
as for tyres - aaaaargh! i've got four mondeo steels in the back garden, can i get rid?? Council Waste place won't take them with tyres on. ATS won't take them with wheels in. Scrapman only wants them if they've got good tread (yeah, right-oh, they'd be on my car if they did!). Only thing i can think of is to take them to ATS, pay through the nose for them to remove the tyres, then cart the wheels down to the tip. Expensive and time consuming. Might put chrome spinners on them and chain them up, be gone overnight....

Only thing i can think of is to take them to ATS, pay through the nose for them to remove the tyres, then cart the wheels down to the tip. ATS take them for me. As well as allow me free reign of all the toys in their workshop. But then my bro-in-law is the branch manager. So that is prolly cheating. ;D

In the good old days you could simply set fire to old tyres, well you can now but your not meant to. Best way to do it is with the tyres covering a gatso.
