Kim Jong Il was buried this week and the cortiege was a convoy of '75 Mercury Grand Marquis stretch limos. Like the funeral scene from The Godfather. Most odd.

I'm going to offer a revised estimate. news coverage I spotted said they were Mercuries but I believe they are actually Lincoln Town Cars. The two were almost identical in the mid 70s but the rear fender line looks wrong for a Mercury.

Incredible! One of the last group of foreigners to visit the country under the control of Jong Il too!
North Korea is a country I have a lot of interest in and would love to visit one day. I don't support the politics of the country, but I just find the whole place very fascinating.
Here's a video of someone driving around Pyongyang I found.
and this really strange bit of footage. Strange because of the John Cooper Works Mini that's in North Korea.

Lex, at last, someone else who wants to go! I've been wanting to go for ages. I've been speaking to Koryo tours about going in 2012 but at the moment everything is pretty much suspended. The contact there told me he'd let me know when they know more but not to expect anything until mid Jan. PM if you're keen on going this year.

It all depends on how much the trip is, as you'd have to also account for the flights to Beijing and possible overnight stays there at each end.
I'm still a jobless student so really not sure if a holiday there is a viable venture!

i am also quite interested to go to north korea having seen footage and documentaries on it lately.
one thing that struck me though, when i was in china in 1994, i was only about 10, we were taken on a tour around a city and only now have i realised what was going on. it was A LOT like all the weird stuff that "tourists" to north korea get taken to, we went to a school, a done out but empty restaurant and hotel and some other other odd things, no cars around, just bikes and we were chaperoned everywhere. this was only for one day out from hong kong. it was bonkers though in retrospect

One of my best mates was in the north Korean de militarised zone having a party when Kim Jong ill died. Not partying because KJI had died, just coincidence. He lives is SK and loves it but says theres not much of a car culture there.
Yet I found out KJI had died before him lol.

He lives is SK and loves it but says theres not much of a car culture there. I'm planning/hoping to move to South Korea within the next few years, and the car culture (or lack of one) is definitely a sad point for me. Their car "culture" is owning a car as part of a families social status, so most people drive around in big saloons, or eco cars because they want to appear as caring for the environment. There is a Junction Produce in Seoul that does VIP style, but from the VIP cars I've seen from SK, they have a long way to go before they catch up with their neighbours in Japan. They are starting to get into drifting thanks to the first Korean RWD car (The Hyundai Genesis), and there are small street drag / drift clubs and meet ups around as I've found some random footage laying around on Naver and the likes. Most modified cars in SK seem to be random KDM cars done up to the nines in fibreglass and glitter.

if the diesel prices as quoted in the OP link are correct then it cost the guy just less than 24p (GBP) to FILL his tank. 1KPW/per litre is basically free as far as we're concerned (0.005p/litre), dunno what the locals earn mind you. I think I'd like to go there too!
