Had loads over the years. In fact still got a couple of more basic sets. They work OK but don't expect the best sound quality. In fact you can forget the amp as the output from even the most basic 1980's radio cassette is going to cause distortion at higher volumes. I've no experience of the better quality pod speakers like the one linked but if you don't want to cut holes in your car you don't have much choice anyway Paul H

Old pods + New speakers would probably be the ideal solution yes Those pictured are amazing... They are even the right colour! As for the amp, it's just easier to wire them that way... It's not really for sound quality

old pods/new speakers FTW. Yeah, i'm thinking some proper old skool '80s ones, usually with something like PYE 100w in huge letters on them - but rip out the paper cones and glue in some modern cones instead, so they're considerably better sounding and can be reasonably well amplified.

Got this setup in my car and its perfectly good enough far better in fact than the standard stereo in the modern. two of these on the rear shelf Pretty shore those are the same as the ones above they don't distort unless I turn the volume up ridicoulously loud. Just use a decent quality speaker wire as that does make a big difference to them. Those are 50w - 100w speakers. On the front parcel shelf I have a pair of these. No holes cut in the car and a better sound system than the modern has. Oh and these are 51w to 100w as well Thats RMS 630s on the back and RMS 620s on the front they also suit the car far better than ones you cut into door cards and the like but mine is a 1967 car.

I got a rear shelf set. similar to the radiomobile but made by pyle. They were fine on the old dollys original lw radio, but didnt like higher volumes and tones of modern units. Found some tiny Bochmann 100w seperates 3.5" which fitted into the box. bakealite type plastic is a curse word to separate. anyway got a bag of wadding from local dressmaker. free offcuts. fitted crossovers filled with wadding installed speakers and then reglued the shelf back together. Perfect.
actually trying to find these speakers again as sound great, but one of the butylsurrounds is starting to perforate.
actually need to find some more of the shelf speakers for my jcb!

Ive also found that my pioneer stereo has a much richer and smoother sound than the old panasonic one it replaced. The type of head unit makes a big difference, I just went for one with a rich depth of sound
