Hey Everyone,
Hope you all had a good christmas, bit of a boring one this...
My exhaust fell off on boxing day leaving me with a very un silenced engine, so was wondering what the score is with the law and driving the car to get it fixed?
Hoping to fix it on the street but just in case would be nice knowing...
Cheers Dan.

When mine did that, I actually got stopped by 5-0 on the way home from the motor factors...
"Is your car broken sir or is this as a result of a modification you've done yourself...?"
I just directed him to the repair parts on the seat behind me.
In summary, they might tell you off a bit so get it sorted when you can. There is a legal noise limit.

that happened on our old primera, went over a speedbump, got a lot noisier, looked and exhaust was snapped in middle neer got pulled either of the 2 times it happened but I'm sure if you explained that it just happened and you were taking it to the garage to get repaired they'd understand

Cops understand not the ones round here. They will do you for anything at the moment.Plus it's a motoring offence so they will do you.Damage private property by all means as you won't get done for that.

Being polite, apologetic and stretching the truth a little will probably get you out of a tight spot if you do get a pull. "Yes officer, I know it's noisy and not ideal but it only happened this morning and it's booked in to be fixed the day after tomorrow" Of course, everything else (tax, insurance, MOT, lights et al) needs to be tip-top for the otherwise law abiding motorist defence to work. I may be wrong but wouldn't a roadside pull need to refer you somewhere for a test? I remember reading a piece on The ACE website about English forces sending their officers out with testing equipment but the objective was education, not prosecutions. Edit: Found it: www.the-ace.org.uk/loud-exhausts-cost-cash.html

2 years ago at christmas my exhaust fell off from the middle of the centre section, just after the cat.
The police pulled me over and read me my rights then gave me a notice to fix the car within 20 days and take it to an MOT station for testing.
The bit where they read me my rights shocked me a bit, but other than that, i got it sorted within the time limit and heard nothing more of it.

I'd be interested to know what the legal limit of noisy exhausts are. I was aware that it was just the opinion of the officer in question

Well i risked it and.... Had the best drive of my life, i was half expecting to look out my side window and see 2 great big engines mounted on a wing, sounded like i was in a bomber lol.
Didnt get any attention from the law and the exhaust is all sorted now.
Was fun while it lasted.
Thanks for all the info guys.

...I wasn't aware they'd actually set a proper decibel limit either?

I'd be interested to know what the legal limit of noisy exhausts are. I was aware that it was just the opinion of the officer in question The exact decibel number is in the construction and use regs. But..... it also states that the exhaust can't be modified in a way that makes it louder. So ANY modification to the exhaust that makes it silence less than factory is technically naughty. Interestingly, the allowed noise level on the IVA/BIVA is quite a bit louder than in the C&E regs. Ultimately, it's all blagable if it isn't take the weewee loud. That's my understanding of it anyway
