	I'm driving 1.9td Scudo van on a W reg and over the last few days i've noticed it becoming harder to start and when it does start greeted by plumes of white smoke. It generally ran ok but everytime I came to a halt the white smoke/steam would come out of the back Yesterday the coolant light came on and today I got advised it will be the headgasket. I've even been pointed towards SteelSeal as a good cost saver to avoid stripping the engine back However, tonight when leaving to come home it just wouldn't start. It did take a pint and a half of water in the expansion bottle It got as far as the glow light going out then nothing. It's acting like the battery is flat but there is no obvious reason for that. I checked the terminals and they are fine. All other electrics are working I tried to bump start but never having tried a diesel before it predictably didn't work, - nowhere near enough speed and I think I should of had my foot down on the throttle.. So now my van is 80 miles away at the bottom of a road and I have borrowed a seicento to get home Any advice on how to get it started at least would be gratefully received Thanks

	It sounds to me like the gasket has now breached fully and you have a cylinder full of water and a hydraulic lock. I have my fingers crossed for you that you didn't bend a conrod trying to bumpstart it.

	The other thing to check is for a water cooled egr cooler , these can leak and give the same symptoms . I did an o4 scudo head recently and that had one , not sure about the earlier ones though .

	as above with the water in cylinders , get it checked out , if it is head gasket these are prone to cracking the head so get it pressure tested when removed,.

I have my fingers crossed for you that you didn't bend a conrod trying to bumpstart it. ^^^^ this. pull the glowplugs out and crank it over if it jets water out of one of the glowplug holes you know your problem. id start looking for another full engine tbh. as these will be cheap as chips as these xud lumps were fitted in lots of things mostly pug 405/306.
