I have an Encore W255 that needs restrung and a 'Liberty' Strat rep that's stringless... Tempted to cobble together a Diddley Bow... I likes me some delta blues. *n Here's your starter for 10 points. She is daaaannng HOT !!! I mean the technique. This is for Andy SOC as well, looking at the way she plays it. Oh, that's Belinda, she is regular in the UK boards of Cigar Box Nation and actually busks with her instruments, had a good chat with her at the Cigar Box Festival in 2010.

Today was a misserable day, Nicola went back to work, I have the week off.... so perfect timing to go have a cuppa with neighbour Mickey and his wife, as we do not see each other as much as when I was unemployed. After that I went to the shed which had warmed up nicely as I had switched the heater on an hour before. Drilled and cut a hole in the one reinforced side as I had forgot to do it before I glued it in..... for the 1/4" jack socket. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/morepix/P1040077.jpg) ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/morepix/P1040078.jpg) I had also followe dthat by soldering the piezo and jack together, after which the holes with coins in the neck were finished off. It was not very long before Mickey popped over for some "Man company" and a few fags, he had not seen what have been up to recently, and was very impressed with what I had done so far..... Not quite Elvis, but you get the idea. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/morepix/P1040080.jpg) Next up I made up the Bridge from an old key and some wood, the nut was next, made of the piece of Corian that Gary had sent over with the original challenge. I recessed the key into the wood and then laid epoxy into the groove and laid the key on top of it. I will carve the excess away with a pen knife tomorrow. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/morepix/P1040084.jpg) ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/morepix/P1040091.jpg) Next job will be stringing it up and getting the CBG played. Remember the "Grizz" brand with the bear I had made up some time ago ? Got to use it today. Used another tip find, Butane weed burner to heat it up..... ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/morepix/P1040087.jpg) Then tested it a few times on various heat levels and some of the wood from the Cigar Box Guitar. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/morepix/P1040089.jpg) Then lastly, tried it on the inside of the CBG, so now it is marked. I must say, I am quite pleased with the ultimate outcome. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/morepix/P1040094.jpg) Thats all for tonight, hope you enjoyed the update.

Looking nice! You might want to put something on top of the piezo to hold it against the top - I have noticed that if you don't hold the centre down tightly they feed back like mad when amplified (imagine someone holding a mic next to a speaker.....)
I have built a diddley bow, and tried it out. I was going to put it here but decided it would be better not to spam your excellent thread so baloo got threadjacked instead.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Was tempted to cross post your Youtube link here anyway. I was not sure where the Piezo was going to work best, so used the best solution, stuck it down on the bottom of the neck which has now been hollowed out more, so no contact with the lid, below the bridge with duct tape.... can be moved if necessary and glued later. Love your Diddley Bow work mate, well done.

Looking good, love the brand. You do know that the best known makers sell their CBGs for £100-250, Have a look for Roosterman, Chickenbone John, among others. Also, Boxstock is moving north so I can get to it this year ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) You may like a little of what is happening this year

And the best thing is, after the big evening gig on day 2, anyone who wants normally jumps up on stage and drunkenly jams until the managers throw us out.
If you have a little Youtube search for UK Cigarbox festival, there are a few vids of 2010 and 2011, some of the classes during the day, and some of the various gigs, Hollowbelly and Tinque8 and Bluesbreaking Redshaw were the highlights.
And in terms of instruments made by people, there were everything from fiddles to banjos to canjos, the CBGs and Stompboxes.

Not sure what the real time spent on this build has been, nor the real cost. But I have absolutely loved doing it. It has allowed me to grow again, nice when you are turning 49 next week. This morning I took the CBG to Sound & Image in Chatham, Kent. Manny E-R as he is known, and Jared and Steve were firstly very impressed with the build and the fact that it looked and handles the way it does. When I bought the strings and pickup for the electric DB that still has to be built, I asked Manny if he would mind stringing it up for me when done, he said no problem and to bring it in when done. I also asked that he pluck it a bit and just try it out when strung up. Once the initial touching, feeling and general chat about the build, including Steve's amazement at the house key Bridge was done, Jared showed me a pic of a triangular Ukelele he had built and plays, and I knew I was in the right company. Between them they researched/decided which strings would suit what I wanted better (different to the ones I had bought) and then Manny tuned it DGBD. He strummed it accoustically and declared it fit and pretty decent, which left me feeling pretty pleased. I took a couple of pics of the stringing up, and then 2 short clips which I am uploading to Youtube at the moment. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/morepix/P1040096.jpg) ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/morepix/P1040099.jpg) This is the final pic of the completed Cigar Box Guitar which still has no name........ If I can get a more artistic pic later, I will post that up. Thanks for all the kind comments and input in this build from everyone who took the time to post in the thread. And a special thanks to the guys at the shop for helping me out. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/morepix/P1040108.jpg) Youtube links posted as soon as I get them loaded, the internet speeds here are pathetically slow.

Right, that was pretty quick.
Sound quality is not great as I used my regular digital camera to record.
I do like his comments though. If you listen above the shop noise, you can hear what he thought of it. And from a guy that people look up to in the shop, it is rather flattering that the comments were what he gave.
I will past the second Electric video clip once it has loaded.
Hope you like it.

Right, second one is up.
Sorry about the length of the clip, as I did not realise there was only about 40 seconds left on the card.
Once I get someone to play a decent piece, I will upload and post on here.
Hope you got the idea.

Shame that second clip got cut short but it's certainly a nice little teaser! ;D Did sound pretty fine from what I can tell (which could be way off seeing as I was a drummer & not a guitarist ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) ), all joking aside that's a cracking instrument with some nice details like the house key & the coins.........When are you building the next one? ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Amazing when you get to hear one played by someone who can play isn't it. I just twang out random noise on mine, but I got such joy when someone plugged mine in and got a "tune" out of it and declared it "Action is a bit high, but great for slide" ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) And they were amazed at the fact I have no musical talent.

Tonight Nicola suggested I take some lessons in basic guitar playing, problem is I do not think there is such a thing as basic guitar playing, it all seems a bit greek to me.

Update for today: I went looking in the rubbish bins of 3 pubs today because we do not drink wine or much beer etc at home, and found some interesting treasures. Firstly, I need to make a Glass slide to play this thing with, "Twanging" as it has been called. Got various bottles, so now need to cut the necks off.... ordered a pack of 10 diamond dust covered dremmell wheels off Ebay for £4.00 delivered..... but am impatient, want to make them today. Any ideas ?? In the first pub wheelie bins I also found two complete Pool Cues or are the called sticks? First thought was stuck together they could work like broomsticks on a CBG, then I thought....hmmmm, Diddley Bow with them stuck to the sides of that plank Nicola's brother gave me, looking like a rocket. Call it the "Pool Cue Rocket" ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ?? Looks like this thing gets deeper under your skin the longer you play with them. Today's treasures. ![](http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm90/niknakpix/morepix/P1040110.jpg) Any other suggestions and ideas welcomed.

Problem is, they are on a standard guitar, ussually tuned to concert pitch. I suppose theres other teachers witb Cigar box guitars

heres a quick lesson.
the higher up the neck you play, the sounds are lower, and the closer to the body you go it gets higher.
just the strings down around places on the neck, make sounds with it and start to understand how it works. don't try to make any recognisable tune out of it, just make noise. trust me, youll get to grips with it pretty quick.
I'm going to make a diddley bow after seeing these - really got into the idea!
